I share pretty much the same views Tony. Artistic vision or not, my bottom line is that if a band has managed to secure these types of distribution rights into their contract, for whatever reason, the labels should be compelled to adhere to that contract.

At the end of the day, the choice should be that of the artist's. I don't necessarily listen only to full albums, even when the songs are al mixed together very well. But I only collect full albums. I also know that the global market reality puts me in the minority.

I can't even begin to think of how shite I'd feel about a collection of random scattered songs on one of my players. At least iTunes and newer iPods still allow you to browse by album, even if you only have one or two songs from said album.

Ok, so it's even more simple. You're talking about an auto-crop. How the FX Nikon cameras can pull DX-sized images from the middle of the FX sensor. It's a reach to call that reach however. :) Because when displayed at the same pixel scale as the full sensor image, the magnification is the same for either image.

Maybe they plan to re-release it at the end of the year? (Shutter). At the end of the day, there's only a fixed amount of slots to release a movie. Stuff gets bumped around all the time by months or years at a time. MOstly to get favorable weekends rather than awards consideration I believe. Happened to Fast and Furious and the last Harry Potter (which was supposed to be released during the preceding November).

Mark, you clearly overestimate my geekiness. :) I'm trying as hard as possible to Macguyver a solution, not actually, you know, develop something quite so sophisticated from scratch.

So far here's what I'm looking at:

Canvas Photo Printing (best prices and most versatile sizing I've found): http://www.uprinting.com/index.php?main_page=confirm_digital_specs&type=order

Decent prices on Somfy motors and roller parts: http://www.av-outlet.com/index.html?target=dept_418.html&lang=en-us

EDIT. Ok, looks like I may go with a Somfy motor that features integrated IR sensor. This would probably require the least amount of hacking because I'd be doing only assembly instead of having to first tear down something that's already put together in a specific configuration (like a pre-built window shade).

As you know, I am retired and living in the lap of luxury in Mexico, complete with a twice-a-week cleaning lady.

She speaks less English than I speak Spanish*, and even our best communicative efforts are on the tentative side. This morning I found her patiently extracting the as-yet-unwashed dishes from the dishwasher, carefully washing each one by hand in the sink, then drying and putting it away.

I was unable to get across to her that she didn't need to do that, she just smiled and said "Si" and continued pulling the dishes out one by one. Next time I'll be prepared:

"No es necesario lavar los platos, el lavavajillas lo hace."

or I'll just make sure to run the dishwasher before she arrives. It is my understanding that she does things her own way (she won't use my Dyson vacuum cleaner when she has a perfectly good broom) and it is best to just let her do her thing. But I did have to smile watching her patiently unload the dishwasher, one item at a time in order to wash it by hand.

tanstaafl.

*I can say "¿Dónde está mi lápiz azul?" with great authority and conviction, but it is disappointing how seldom the topic of blue pencils actually comes up in conversation here. :)

 Posted by necessejamais:
Hello. I'm a student at the University of Southern Maine, and I'm doing a group project on 'how a product is globalized.' My group is trying to find out some basic info about a product's marketing, distribution (national & international), suppliers & manufacturing, and IP ownership, to illustrate how a product begins as an idea & then becomes part of the global market.
A friend suggested this site to me, as there are users on it who develop, manufacture & sell software &/or hardware internationally. I just found out that my project is due March 16th, so I'm trying to find a product ASAP, & someone willing to talk to me who knows a lot about the product (who supplies parts, who manufactures it, how it's marketed & where, etc.) Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks for your time :)
...another TomTom related problem is the volume on the cradle. It doesn't remember the last volume setting, so when you power it down, or even just remove the iPhone the next time it is back to near minimum volume. annoying.
That one irritates me too, I can kind of understand that behaviour *if* they'd provided an option in the car kit tool to set the default level, but they haven't, it always reverts back to the "this is what we've deemed default to be" level. I always jack it right up.
I have tried the TomTom app both with and without the cradle for navigation and the GPS in the cradle is clearly much better than the one built in the iPhone. It gets a lock amazingly quickly and never lost it once during the few hundred miles I did yesterday. The standard GPS jumps about a bit and seems to lag behind causing the voice prompts to be given quite late on some occasions. So I need the TomTom cradle for GPS and the mounting solution, and the parrot for just about everything else!
Thats the same result I get on my 3G, without the cradle the GPS is not reliable at all in the car, although it seems that YMMV with regards to whether it works acceptably or not.

TomTom did make me smile friday night on the way home, as I came out of the limehouse link tunnel it got a little confused (it had picked up a lock straight away and was showing me on the map in the right place) and told me to follow the limehouse link for 3 thousand, eight hundred and eighty miles. Bit extreme I thought!

For 9 years my commute was 15-20 minutes of easy country roads each way, then I was in Sydney and it was a 5 minute walk, then I moved back here and it was 1hr out, 45 mins back on dual carriageway and twisty A-roads.

Thankfully I bought a place closer (Farnborough) before the winter, I have driven back to my parents after work a few times and I think commuting that route this winter would have got seriously frustrating and tiring, not to mention hazardous.

 Posted by hybrid8:
Thanks for the link Bitt. Unfortunately, none of the listed programs is an alternative, but it did help me find at least one other program I can use along side Sketchup.

Live Interior 3D from BeLight is a nice little app I had seen a couple of years ago. It's matured quite a bit since then and seems to be the perfect tool for working on building interiors. A lot more streamlined than Sketchup for this task since it's the program's specialty. That allows me to use Sketchup to work on individual objects, including potentially some exterior scenes, rather than complex interiors or other scenes requiring multiple complex objects.

Most of the apps listed, including the number one "alternative" were more traditional 3D modeling apps for creating poly-based characters and organic objects. The biggest advantage Sketchup has over everything else is that it's a sort of hybrid 3D CAD and illustration tool with a foundation in real-world metrics and scale. It just needs tweaks to make the creation of certain shapes easier and more intuitive. And of course the tweak I mentioned to help navigate the UI and objects.
