I used it briefly while travelling -- The "Linux" version is simply the Windows .exe file running under Wine.

As such, it should be near 100% identical to what you see on Windows.

RTC is locked to our on site GPS so I don't think it's that. I also disabled the corporate firewall (which disables the Windows one on installation) but that makes no difference. I've found one machine that it works on but sadly that's my dev machine which has all sorts of crap on it, too much to go through one by one to figure out what it is.

Another option would be to rewrite the app and make client/server and just run the server element on one of my linux boxes. This is actually likely to be quicker.]]>

I haven't heard any reports of recovered data with the new secure erase being used in iPhone 2.0+

The dialog claims it takes about an hour to erase - that sounds pretty rigorous to me. Just don't deactivate the phone before erasing - you won't be able to access the feature.

The PCBs are made by a company called FASTPCB, in China. Pretty sure it's these people, the logo they put on my boards is the same :) I used a company called ALR Services, who then arrange the boards to be made whereever. They're one of the companies I've used for years, and I've always had good service from them. There is a NRE charge for making the boards which is rather variable depending on options required, but the cost per board was about a third the price of any other quote I got. This was on 10 day turnround.

The BGA mounting was done by Allgood Technology using vapour-phase reflow which doesn't need a stencil, the expensive bit in prototyping. It was £10 + VAT per device mounted. Turnround time was about 5 days.

The blue is very nice, yes. The funny thing is that the two PCBs are noticeably different colours, although they were made by the same company at the same time!

I drive a tiny Mazda MX5 with a 2l engine that has been laughed at on a few occasions (for its size). In New England (Boston and surrounding States), people seem to believe you have to drive an All Wheel Drive 4x4 SUV Tank to get through the winter. Many of the middle States drive crappy huge cars because Detroit tells them to, Texas just doesn't get it (on many things - but it's a nice place to visit briefly), and California should know better.

That said, I am confident that the economic downturn will finally convince a few people here to care more about what actually matters - and size really isn't one of those things. Hopefully, one day we'll be proud to buy American cars, but until then Detroit needs to learn a hard lesson (bail out or no bail out, and if the former then it better involve reform).

A new unit for that price can't be built like a tank. I probably would be skeptical of a Memorex DVD player, let alone a Blu-Ray player.

It does seem to have some nice features. 5.1 Analog outputs on something so cheap is an achievement. Too bad there are no reviews at all. No firmware updates yet, but the player may be too new.]]>

There's nothing particularly "bad" about subwoofer systems that predate Dolby 5.1 surround setups, when properly done with low-pass filters (as in Dignan's case).

Even 5.1 isn't magic -- sure, it works incredibly well when coupled with an input source that was created with 5.1 encoding. But for anything else, it has to do the same tricks as the "old stuff" did when creating a feed for the sub.

I don't think Boeing will falter- even if the stock does.
Just to be contrarian- remember that planes are a very cyclical industry and the cost of failure on the 787 is very high. Also the tanker contract is most likely lost even with the re-bid offer (just done by the Pentagon to appease politicans) and the Iraq war may be coming to a close sooner rather than later depending on who gets elected.
Well, I've put off buying any stocks and now Boeing is floating around $40...
Luckily I didn't get around to investing my money right away (though my 401 K dropped round $50k). My company’s stock dropped to ¼ its value compared to last year and half my the people in my department just got laid off .

I did buy a few shares last week but I think I’ll hold off on investing in anything too risky right now since I may be on the street soon as well.

Watched it last night. Seeing archival footage of George W. Bush and Karl Rove was very enlightening. You can see echoes of Atwater tactics in every later campaign, up to and including McCain's campaign.

What's intriguing is the way the Obama campaign designed itself to counter Atwater-style attack politics. The whole "politics of hope vs. politics of fear" concept was designed to fight back in a relatively positive way. In particular, the Obama people would not just deny misinformation, but they'd attack the messenger for putting out negative information. Likewise, they were clearly ready with tit-for-tat responses. You smear us, we'll smear you.

According to the documentary, Atwater has no compunction against bold lies to tarnish his opponents and screw with their heads. You can actually see some of this going on even now, post-election. Example: the "we're still a center-right country" theme, implying somehow that Obama shouldn't push too hard on undoing the right-leaning policies put in place in the Bush administration.

My head's been spinning all morning, trying to look at the McCain/Obama race through the lens at Atwater-style tactics and counter-tactics. Fascinating stuff.]]>
