Stopped responding again. I then rebooted the player and again after a few seconds it froze up. The music is the leased of my concerns at this piont. Like I said before there is actually very little on the player right now so if I have to loos it to get the player working again it is not a big deal. I have it all backed up, twice.

In addition to removing the database (which it looks like you still need to get right), you also need to:

- Start the player without a tune so that it boots up to "end of playlist". (FAQ entry linked earlier in this thread.)

- Synch once with emplode. (As described in the FAQ entry about removing the database.)

After that, do *not* choose a playlist. Just let the player sit there at "end of playlist".

NOW does it stop responding after 8-10 seconds? Or does it work OK up until you start playing tunes?

My player sdhowed similar symptoms, It would work as usual for a short time and then the buttons would not work anymore, but the screen continued, and the ethernet connection also continued to work.

After a while, the buttosn stopped wortking alltogether (IR also stopped working together with the buttons)

Carsupport tought it might be the displayboard-pic, and a replaced display board fixed it.

Yup, exactly. The diagnostic steps we're trying to list, above, are intended to narrow down whether it's a software problem (such as corrupted MP3 files), or whether we should start looking at hardware problems such as the one you are describing.

It's still trying to play a song, according to the serial output. You need to do this, as was mentioned earlier in the thread, to stop it from playing a song.

Then, you need to continue with the remainder of the instructions here so that the database can be rebuilt.

Once you've done that, do not play a song or a playlist. Boot the player and tell us whether or not it continues its previous behavior of locking up after it's been on a few seconds.

If it continues to lock up, even if it's not playing any songs, then I would consider it highly likely that it's a hardware problem.

OK, I went through the whole process. I restarted not in a play list and everything seened OK. I then synced using Emplode and that went great for a change. I then deleted everything off the player exept two song for test use and resynced. To my suprise that went smoothly and the player restarted, not in a play list. I started the songs playing to test things and everything was going good but just the RIO/ song name and title/time was on the screen so to really test things out I started messing with the visuals and it started doing the same thing again. To make sure it was something to do with the visuals or that it just happened to lock up while I was messing with them I went back into hyperterm. and set the player to restart out of a playlist. The player is now playing fine, with controls and "stock" visual just fine but as soon as I mess with the visual setting it freezes again. This is sounding like the display board as per other post but I am just guessing. You guys are the Empeg gurus, not me, LOL.

Which visual are you selecting? Can you name a specific one that fails every time?

OK, it seens like all the individual visuals are working fine but here is the strange thing. If you select one visual it will work fine but if you select Auto Change, either On Track or Time Out, the visual will play till it needs to change to the next one the then goes to the RIO visual and stays there. I have tried just about very combo I can think os to make it work or not work and all end with the RIO visual on next change and it just stays there. When it freezes is when you select Random under the Select Mode section. Does this help you guys any.

Greetings!

Are you running any custom visuals? Did you upload or replace the empeg "tux" graphic?

I saw the following in his first posted bootlog further up this thread:

Found custom animation at offset 0x9f750
Scheduling custom logo

- Is that what you were referring to?

Not really. You can substitute out your own graphic for the tux. I am just wondering if it could be a corrupted image, and if that would cause this problem.

Can anyone else reproduce this problem?

Where did everyone go. Still need to figure out what is going on with my poor Rio. I have not done anything to the Tux graphics so I do not think it is that. Any other ideas?????

Hm. It wouldn't happen to be this or this would it?

WOW, thanks Tony. I take back everything bad I ever said about you, HeeHee, just kidding. But you are "the man". I cleared the config ini. file and then did a sinc Emplode. I entered in my info and resinced and now it seens to be working A OK. Thanks again to you and everyone else for the help. The upside to this is now I know a lot more about the workings of the player which is cool. The down side is now I get to reload all the cool Kernals, hacks, boot logo, web interface and all my music. Fun Fun!!!!! At least now I have a working play. I am going to mess with it more here tonight and post back one more time just to make sure. Any ideas of how this happened?

Again to everyone-BIG THANKS FOR EVERYONES HELP!!!

Any ideas of how this happened?

Yes. If it's the bug I think it is, here's how it worked:

If you used Emplode 2.0 beta 11 and created a list of Favorite Visuals, there was a bug. Each time you synched more than once in the same Emplode session, Emplode would append instead of replace the list of favorite visuals. So if you made a change, hit Sync, then made another change, and hit Sync again, then it would instantly double the size of your favorite visuals list. There are some limitations to how the player can use config.ini, so once config.ini gets too big, things go wonky. And as you know, the way exponential numbers work, it doesn't take too many of these double-syncs to reach that point.

I didn't think to check this until you started talking about auto-switching visuals. Sorry we didn't think to check it earlier.

Please check to make sure you've updated your Emplode version (not the player... emplode) to the latest version, which has this bug fixed.
