I signed up for vonage it works great except that the caller id does not display the name of the caller just the number.

Does anyone know of a caller id box or a phone with caller id that would allow me to assign a name to the number.

I have found one program for windows that will do this http://www.identafone.com/pro.html but I don't like it that well. If someone knows of another program for windows that would do this that might be ok too.

I have an old Bell Atlantic box I intend to use. But the thought occurred to me, the name will only display if they send it to you. Do Vonage send a name as well as a number?
I am about to sign up with Vonage to try them out anyway.

I have heard that Vonage can work with name and number if you use a different VoIP box (whatever the thing that hooks up to the cable modem is called). The one they provide from Cisco apparently does not support name and number. If you got a newer model, you would get name and number caller ID.,

I don't have Vonage, I don't know anyone that has it either. I just remeber that from some forum (possibly this one).

You are talking about a Bell Atlantic caller id box right ?

All vonage told me is that with the caller ID you only get the number. I'm not sure if they only send the number or if it is because of the cisco VOIP thing like Rob suggested.

I think it's worth not having the name on the CID to more than cut my phone bill in half and to not have to pay all the asinine taxes on the phone line.

I wish I could use the yac program Rob linked on my series 2 tivo it would be great to have the info displayed on the tv.

You can use the Windows client, it's not just for TiVo.

I have YAC running on my Series1 It rocks.

Yeah I saw there is one just for windows but I wish I could run it on the tivo too.

Hey Rob, I have a question. When the caller ID info is displayed and you're recording at the time, does that get recorded? My parents' new sat receiver has this feature, and while it's nice, while the TiVo is connected I have it turned off so it doesn't get recorded.

With a directivo the CID info does not get recorded.

With a standalone I don't think it would get recorded either since it's the Tivo that's displaying the info instead of the DirecTV receiver.

Actually, I check my wireless phones, they always override the name if the phonelist in the phone has the name. This is great for the useless tag of "Wireless Caller" that SBC gives here.
It doesn't work if your phone number is out of area, ie: the incoming number is 770-123-1234 but it is stored in the phone as 1-770-123-1234. but I hope that shouldn't be a problem with Vonage because you don't use a 1 prefix.

I am going to have to learn to stop that

What phone do you have ?

Actually with vonage I have to dial a 1 for all calls including local calls. However they don't charge long distance if it would be a local call with my local phone company.
