I need some advice from the pros...
http://www.baycom.org/~tom/ham/soundmodem/
The above software should be able to run on the empeg? right? anybody know whether the mkiss driver will compile for the empeg? The above software apparently requires no FPU.
We could use the Mic-in to decode ax.25 data this way, right?

I've not tried it but the 2.2.x kernel that the empeg uses does have the mkiss driver inside.

This is seemingly interesting... if one could interface a ham receiver/transmitter that would be pretty cool..

What would be even BETTER would be if something like GPSapp would transmit your current GPS coordinates over the Ham Radio link... I can't recall the name of the packet service, but it will allow you to track your vehicle's whereabouts

I believe BBS User rowitech (Rolf) has a similar car-tracking set up he was telling me about at the Amersfoort meet this summer. You might want to ask him how his is set up.

Yes, APRS would be *very* nice to be able to use the empeg for... I found the other day a design for making a normal NMEA GPS able to send position over "raw IR" which can be decoded with a normal IrDA port without the IrDA-stack. Apparently OZIexplorer can use this for APRS on a PocketPC device.
This should make us able to receive GPS data without hogging the Serial port, and then a HAM radio modem/TNC could be used on the serial port for APRS. Alternatively, the Mic-in could be used to read and decode APRS packets, but we would then at least need the serial port to transmit APRS.

Yes, indeed, at http://tracking.rowi.net you see my APRS-Signals from my car. I decided against using the empeg for it because with Tinytrak (http://www.byonics.com/tinytrak/) you can accomplish the same even with low budget.
The Tinytrak has a serial passthru so you can connect GPSapp to it. This works fine for me.
With an optional Y-Cable you can grab the serial signal for e.g. a Pocket PC, as I do. The current is enough for splitting the output of the serial port of the Tinytrak to feed two devices. This is ok because you have a one-way-connection (unless you want to program the GPS-mouse).

You can see all this and now tuner installing included at the next Amersfoort meet. There will be no hidden cables because I do compete again ;-).

That is extreemly cool. I hope you take your empeg with you when you leave your car.

What kind of radio are you using to transmit the location?

Oh, you can bet if I take it with me all the time :-). I will do.

I use an Alinco DJ100TC, VHF transceiver. Not the newest but still works with APRS. But, this APRS-thing can be accomplished even with two left hands. It's as easy as opening a bottle of beer ;-).

Nevertheless, displaying packets via Packet Radio or just messages via APRS at the display would be cool though.

I presently can't find my TNC, so I'm looking for a way to do this without one, but I don't have time just now, because I have got a 1 week old daughter sleeping on my chest :-)

you can find me on aprs on for instance http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/find.cgi?lb4pe

Im using a kenwood V7E with a soundcard modem, as well as IP over ADSL

Congrats! Once I learned how to get my kid to sleep in my lap, I got tons more work done. My wife even has a picture of me eating dinner with a napkin draped over her!
