Actually, all three of them work great!!! That's George, Thirty, and Sixty (do your players have names?)

Sure there were a few things I didn't like about them at first, but then I did this and that seemed to help a little bit.

Just thought you'd all like to know.

"crowley" is my mk2a. "toothgnip" is my mk2.

My Rio Receivers have names from early NASA manned missions. One of them is called "aurora". I don't remember what the other one's called, because the Receivers are in the attic until we get a flat or house large enough to need them.

The Central doesn't have a name yet, because it's not plugged into the network.

The Rush Machine (Because when I named it, that was about all it had on it). I still have Tony's Rush image on boot up, too!

Just "empeg," though it is a RioCar Mk2A, the original empeg had to be replaced, 4 foot fall it never fully recovered from.

My players are bipolar; I have Rage and Calm. Calm lives at home in the dock and Rage is for the road. The are both happy well adjusted devices that play well with others and only complain when abused. Occasionally they like their cables pressed and tightened, but who doesn't?

Well, my empeg is just called empeg, and the spare has no name.

But the computers at home are called:

pootle
plinglot
brodgar
ubik1
ubik2
storch
frank
stein

All named after famous characters.

(I also have a stack of boxes I was working on clustering called:

chalcedone
chrysoprase
sapphire
etc etc etc

but I ran out of time - ie got married and had kids)

Deiter

No rules for names I guess, but you most likely mean Dieter. "ie" is called a "long i" in German and is pronounced as the name suggests, that is, like the "ee" in seen. Just out of curiosity: I see this very mistake happen frequently to native English speakers when using "long i"-words. Why is that? Does an "e" after an "i" look weird to you because it's a uncommon construct in English? (Not that I could tell off the top of my head if it's uncommon or not, it would take me an hour or two of random browsing through a dictionary.)

My Players:
Mk2a: Tempest
Mk2: Rae

EDIT:
Sashca

I oversaw that one in my original post. It's Sascha. I'm not trying to put the finger on every little typo, but because it's a foreign language to you there's a chance that you've got them spelled incorrectly on your player as well, which is something I'm sure you don't want after you cared enough to pick a naming scheme.

This is where we learn the truth about skunknumber1.
My players actual name is skunk1. When I first created an account on Riocar.org to upload some static logos, I tried to use my players name as the user name but it was already taken. So you all know me as Skunknumber1.
My nick name is Skunk due to a white streak in my hair I've had since I was five.
SecretSkunk is the name I was given by my musician buddys after Secret Squirrel.

Oh yah, Brad called my skunky once.

Probably the opposite -- "ie" is much more common in English than "ei", and so "ei" looks more German to us than "ie" does, thanks to words such as Einstein, Geiger, Klein, mein, Steinberg, and Zeiss. Of course none of those are pronounced anything like Dieter. It's much harder to think of an adopted German word or name with "ie" in it -- Siegfried is about the only one.

It also doesn't help that "dieter" is an English word with three syllables -- die-ate-uh, one who diets (i.e. with food) -- so it looks wrong to write it for a German word with two syllables.

Well, if we're going to get into computers at home also, then..

Foxy, Bertha, Slowy, Gutsy, Dooly (dual-P3), Windy, Ibbm (IBM Notebook), Dan, Deli (Dell Notebook), Tbird, Brick, Jetty, Shifty, Rita, Tosh, Breezy, and Smokey (fastest machine).

Clearly a pronunciation guide written by an Englishman. What's up with you all not pronouncing your R's, anyway?

We have two development machines at work I named "hans" and "franz".

Mostly because they are huge Sun boxes and all other servers look "girlie" in comparison.

My player is working just fine, and so is my father's, And yes, they have names. Mine is Valentine, and my father's is named Bean.

A cookie to the person to guess where the names came from.

How on earth can you have that much computers serving a purpose?
It's not like I don't understand the need for several machines (Cynthia - Redhat workstation; Samantha - W32 workstation; Sarah - Debian file server; Lisa - Debian Sniffer; Laura - monitors, plots and logs heart beat, controls treadmill over RS232; Cassandra - Debian, on and around the treadmill workstation; Lena - Laptop;), but it would be interesting to see what purposes your machines all serve. Do you run your own little private cluster Mark?

Well, this is my development lab. Many of those are special purpose machines sent to me for specific projects: eg. slowy, gutsy, hpserv (forgot to list it), Brick, etc.. The others have just accumulated, and are basically almost worthless on the resale market, so they live on here as trial machines.

Darn.. missed another one too: nw2 (second Netwinder; "Windy" is the main one).

Cheers

Yeah, that was pretty easy. That is cool though, I have a very similar naming scheme for my computers; Barak, Silk, Hettar, Mandorallan, and Belgareth. My Empegs, alas, have no names, although if I did I would probably call my main one "Precious".

But of course, names run as follow.

Jolene named after the car she's destined to occupy

Helena because she's never been out of the box

Nanci from a Toad the Wet Sprocket song because I loaned her to a friend.
