Potentially useful link, but I was instantly turned off by the fact that he links the word "Tivo" every place it appears in the text, as opposed to just the first time.
I hope he merely misused some sort of automation to do that. I'd feel really weird if I found out he painstakingly did every single one of those by hand.

Sweeeet. Finally someone wrote it all up! I've been trying to figure this out in my non-existent spare time for a while now. But what i REALLY want and what they don't seem to offer is a software upgrade to post 4.0. Man i'd kill to have folder sorting in my playlist!!!

I discovered recently that you can do alpha sorting. Do you know about that? It's a reasonable stopgap until better software comes along, if it ever does.

Go to the "Now Playing" list, then press Slow, Zero, Record, Thumbs Up. This'll pop up a menu that'll let you select sort-by-alpha, -by-expiration, and -by-record-date (normal). The cool thing is that you don't have to hit that long string again. It just turns on the sorting method, and you can get to it via "Info" or something like that from the "Now Playing" list (it'll say at the bottom of the "Now Playing" screen). Even cooler, you don't even have to go to that menu again. You can just press 1, 2, or 3 to go directly to the different sorts. And, unlike most things on the TiVo, it doesn't take an hour and a half to perform.

Very cool!
Another thing that turned me off to doing some of these software hacks was that your player could get hosed if DirecTV did ever send a software upgrade... is there any truth to this?

I noticed on the page that Rob linked to that they had some option that prevented software upgrades. It's the sixth-to-last FAQ. It'd suck not to get one, though.

It sounds like you're getting "DirecTV hacking" and "Tivo hacking" confused.
That page is about changing the Tivo software, not about changing the DirecTV smartCard to get free satellite.
Although I suppose it's possible that one could screw up the other, not sure.

For most hacks it's "the hack goes away"; The only one that was dangerous was the "special kernel for >137gb disks"

No, I have no interest in DirecTV hacking but I may have gotten some of the posts I've read mixed up. I simply want HMO! 
From their FAQ: Quote:
Is this hack protected against software updates?
Userland (U5): no longer supported,
Monte script: uses the upgradesoftware=false on the bootpage,
Prom script: uses upgradesoftware=false on the bootpage.
Do I need to make my new (un used) DirecTiVo to make a call before applying the hack?
You do not have to, but it is recommended. This way you will have the latest software.
Updates are blocked after the update (it would either damage or even undo the hack).

Given that this include a hack for enabling the USB ports and hence gets ones TiVo on to network can the TiVo then dial out over a broadband connection? I'm considering dropping our home phne line completly as I've upgraded our wireless phone plan. One more stupied question - how much space is enough space on a TiVo?

I can't say for sure, it's been a while since i've looked at all this stuff, but i'm pretty positive that yes, you can "dial" over broadband after enabling the USB ports.
As for space. I've got 160GB (which is limited to 120 until I install a hacked kernel) and i haven't hit the wall yet. I'm starting to save tons of movies though, so i can see it coming soon. Keep in mind that speed becomes an issue. My DTivo is PAINFULLY slow at times. The now playing list locks up quite often for 20 seconds or more.

Really? I just did this hack a couple weeks ago and my understanding was the opposite. The DTivo gets its programming from the sat so all it dials up for is PPV and I thought that had to be done over the phone line?

Same here, have you come across any directions for that?
Incidentally does anybody know of a way to limit the amount of suggested recordings the tivo retains? With 120 gigs (mostly free) its been recording like crazy and scrolling through it all is a pain. I'd like to be able to lock that down to say 20 hours just to keep the list manageable.

I know this works on SA units but since Direct TV manages the DirecTiVo's you would need to test it.
You just need to be running DHCP on your network and set ,#401 in the dialing options and it should connect to the service over the network.

My DTivo complains if it can't make its "Daily Call", it's very specific about that. I don't know what information it's gathering or sending with that daily call, I just know it makes one and complains if it can't.

It is sending your viewing habits back to the mothership. One of the hacks that is included as part of the sleeper package from the original post prevents that. So if you are hacked it should only dial up for PPV (as I understand it, I'm pretty new to this).

Yeah, actually I agree with you. I may figure out how to turn that hack off at some point. I normally wear my tinfoil hat with pride, but tivo could actually use that data to improve my service.

Most likely, that feature gets turned off when the Tivo loses power. The 30-second-skip has the same behavior.

I've only seen it get turned off when the TiVo reboots, which, in my house, only happens when the power goes out, which is much too often.

I have a script that runs to turn on 30ss and a few other options. That way if something ever stops after some time, it either restarts by itself (in case of power failure or reboot), or I can kick off the entire script instead of activating one "hack" at a time. I don't need TiVo (or anyone else) knowing I'm in Canada (because this country doesn't officially exist).. So I'll keep the phone disconnected.  Bruno

After many months of procrastination I finally got v4.0.1b running on my DirecTiVo and am listening to an MP3 streamed through HMO right now. This guide is pure gold. Just about the only thing it covers is actually getting v4 up and running properly on your DirecTivo. It worked and only took about 1 hour. 
PS- RID stands for Receiver ID and was aparently a measure taken in newer DirecTivo models to prevent successful installation of v4. The only DirectTivos that are non-RID are aparently the original Hughes HDVR2, DVR39, and Philips DSR7000. The box I tested on was a Hughes DVR80 (which is RID). Works like a charm. 
There are some new DirecTivo boxen out in the channel now called R10 which are DirecTV-branded and unhackable at this point.
