Thanks Rob, Slingbox looks pretty cool. ETivo too, but it doesn't work with the Series 1. I looked at Tivo to Go just now and it has some great featuresas well. Maybe it is time for me to upgrade.

Answered my own question. I've been using tivoweb and didn't know what I was missing. Just loaded up Tivowebplus and found it contains functions to clear the logs, nice!

I'm looking to get another DirecTivo for hacking.. Has anyone kept up to date on which is the best one to get? I'm happy with my HDVR2s but they are a bit slow some times.. I know DirecTV has switched from Tivo, but there were a few models released after the HDVR2 and I'm wondering if a) they are hackable and b) they are worth getting over the HDVR2. Any insight would be great!

Any series 2 DirecTiVo except for the R10 and HD box is hackable. They all operate at the same speed. There is a big speed increase between 4.0.1b and 6.2. If you haven't upgraded your hacked 4.0.1b box, definitely do that!

All I've heard is that there are beta units out in the wild now, so I doubt it will be too much longer before we can buy them. I'm pretty sure I will switch from DirecTV. At the very least I think I will drop HD service with DirecTV and get cable's.

You can hack the HR10-250. Here's the easy way. However it was leaked that DirecTV has a version 6 TiVo software coming soon for the HD TiVo's. Otherwise it is still 3.1.5f, so it stays slow, and no show sharing/folders.

I'm actually surprised nobody here knew about it. I just have a Series 1 SA TiVo, but converted a friend. He just bought a HR10-250 off eBay, we hooked it up, and started looking in to hacking it. This was the day after the announcement. He's held off on hacking it because he doesn't want to buy the InstantCake disc for 3.1.5f when 6.3 will be faster and have folders. Something I definitely wish I could have with my SA!

That is very true. The only times I visit tivocommunity or dealdatabase is when I have a problem. I know I'll never see folders for my series 1, so I'm not looking for any software update to give it to me.

I'll believe it when I see it.
I'm waiting for the day when DTV starts screwing the MPEG-2 streamers and forcing us to use MPEG-4 devices. Since TiVo won't have a solution, I'm afraid.
I can't live without TiVo. (yes, there's a period at the end of that sentence)
I've always hated cable and Comcast even more... What is a geek to do??? The humanity!

That's what I'm wondering! My HD Tivo is still waiting to be updated.
And I had to stop reading that thread because it got too annoying. It was filled with people saying "I told you so" to past posters who said the upgrade would never come. Who could blame them? Like Bitt, I had written off Tivo on DirecTV, and when I move into my new house (sometime this year), I will be looking into cable using the S3, which will hopefully be out by then.
But for now, if I could only get folders on my HD Tivo I would be happy.

Have you done the alphabetical sorting trick? It's almost as good as folders (at least to me). It groups everything on the Now Playing screen into sections, much like folders would.
For me, the main thing I'm looking for with the upgrade is better speed. I hate waiting three minutes each time I change a program from "space needed" to "save until I delete".
Anyhow, if you haven't done the alphabetical sorting trick, here's how to do it. I'm going from memory here, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong:
- Go to the Now Playing screen.
- Press S O R T, where:
S = SlowPlay button
O = Zero
R = Tivo Record
T = Thumbs Up
You should now see a doohickey at the bottom of the screen talking about sorting options. You can either follow its instructions (going into a menu to select your sort options), or you can stay out at the Now Playing screen and press the 1, 2, and 3 number keys to change the sort order. One of the numbers is the alphabetical option.

That's a pretty good solution, and I would probably use it myself, but I need something for my parents and their Tivo. They wouldn't like that method, I don't think. I really don't like sorting alphabetically on Tivo, which is why I like the folders so much, since they're grouped and then listed by last recorded time.
But you're right, the speed issue is probably bigger for me (well, them [my parents]) too. They're always complaining that when they try to record something, they have to sit there for five minutes while it schedules it. That's just too much.

From what I've heard, no. My friend just went ahead and bought InstantCake (version 3.1.5) to do his upgrade/hack and to enable DVR functionality (he doesn't have a phone line so the TiVo wouldn't record anything). He's still hoping 6.3 will be released.

For those awaiting Series 3 TiVos, rumor mill has it that they will be offering a lifetime upgrade to their "most loyal customers." Series 1 and Series 2 lifetime service owners will be able to transfer that lifetime service to a Series 3 for an additional $199. Series 3 Box must be purchased by December 31, 2006 and lifetime transfer by January 31, 2007. Also includes a free year of service for the box that you transferred from.

Oh how nice. I get to pay $1,000 for the Series 3 box now! I was considering a switch to cable to get series 3, but with boxes costing $799, and 4 boxes currently in my house each requiring a monthly fee that doesn't make sense. To make things even more anti-tivo, I have been weighing getting an HR10-250 (DirecTV HD Tivo box) or the new HR20-700 (DirecTV HD NDS DVR) for the past couple weeks. I think I will not only stick with DirecTV, but I will also get the NDS box. I see no reason to spend $300+ for the HR10-250 when MPEG4 is in my area already and the MPEG2 HD lifespan is in doubt. Once Sept 13th rolls around, the HR20-700 will be available for around $250 and come with the AT9 dish and professional installation (self-installation of the AT9 seems to be a pain in the ass). Sure, the HR20-700 isn't a Tivo, but it's faster than v3.1 software that the HR10-250 seems to be stuck with. The only thing it seems to be missing is dual live buffers (unfortunate) and the OTA ports aren't active yet (I can't get anything OTA anyway). I can live with these limits and I still have an army of Series 2 DirecTivos to do HMO things. Leasing boxes is lame, but I have heard that if you buy DirecTV boxes from authorized dealers and ask for the "access card deprtment" when activating, they will be able to activate your receiver as owned if you ask. You don't get a new dish and free install this way, but you also don't need to re-up your commitment to DirecTV.

If any of those boxes are series 1 boxes, they may have the Grandfather clause in the policy which allows you to transfer your lifetime membership to 1 device free of charge if lifetime service was purchased prior to January 2000.
Also, $199 extra doesn't seem like a bad deal compared to paying $12.95/mo for service. It only takes a year and 4 months to come out ahead on that deal, and I plan on having it significantly longer than that.

I'd be curious to see what you think of the non-Tivo boxes, but dual tuners and HMO are the only two reasons I'm sticking with DirecTivos to begin with... with those not being offered on the non-Tivo box (or features similar to them) I don't see myself making the switch. I transfer shows and view jpgs or mp3s daily.

Yeah, I'm not throwing away my S2 DirecTivos, but I'm not going to be purchasing an HR10-250. I will definitely give my opinion on the new non-Tivo DVR. I plan on picking one up after I get back from the meet in 2 weeks.
To be clear, the new HR20-700 doesn't support dual live buffers, but does have dual tuners and can record two things at once. It's just that you can't switch between the two tuners while watching live TV. The 2nd tuner just sits in the background doing nothing until you want to record something while watching something else (or recording two things).
HMO isn't available yet, but I would be surprised if something like that didn't come out eventually. The box has ethernet and SATA ports on the back. I doubt they would be there if there wasn't an intent to use them at some point. I guess you could argue that the USB ports on DirecTivos are still supposed to do nothing...

When the MPEG2 stream goes away, and I have no TiVo option for DirecTV, I'm f-ed. I am trying to decide on what method to use - hanging by rope, tall building, drugs, the garden hose in the tailpipe, or shotgun.

The Series 3 is an HD Cablecard Tivo. It doesn't work with DirecTV.
