I've just got a carbon and have noticed its got 2 serial numbers.

One on the back on the carbon and a completely different one according to rio manager. Any idea which one I should use when getting the mp3 encoder. Not that it matters to me.

I bought 2 of these within 2 weeks from the same supplier. The 1st had 1.02 firmware and the 2nd has 1.32. The 2nd also came with an extra cable. It's a 4" cable with a 1/8" jack plug on one end and a 1/8" jack socket on the other. Any idea what its for?

There was a problem with some headphones having static from touching the chrome plated top of the player so maybe it's a fix for that ?

Use the ser# on the back of the player. The RMM serial number is more a player ID than an actual serial#.

The extender jack (there's no bit of paper in there describing it?) is to help users who have headphones that would cause static when used with the socket on the player itself (ie, ones with a metal surround).

Hopefully Toby can get one of these before connecting his Carbon to my stereo again! I think I was pretty close to new tweeter shopping after our new year party.

Thanks for the answers. Explains it all.

As a followup, anyone tried getting the back engraved?

Support are posting them out for free on request, I'll try and pick one up for him when I'm at the office next week. An easier interim solution might be a minijack-RCA cable without a metal surround as these are pretty common.

Link to fix for Carbon.

Q:I'm experiencing static with my Rio Carbon, but only when I use my own headphones. What can I do?

This is a known issue that we have recently discovered. The issue has to do with a small set of headphones, not the ones included with our product, which have metallic parts on the base of the jack. When this comes in contact with our chrome top, a short can occur. The short can be exhibited as a pop, distortion in sound, or skipping. This has been fixed in manufacturing.

Carbons produced after 11/16, that don't have the fix implemented yet, will include a headphone adapter. Simply plug your headphones into the adapter, and plug the adapter into your Carbon.

If you've already purchased a Carbon and you're experiencing this problem, please email Customer Care with the following information, and we'll ship you a washer or headphone adapter:

1. Name
2. Address
3. Phone Number
4. Place of Purchase
5. Date of Purchase

My first attempt to get one got me a link to the Rio store from tech support. My response had the full link/text, so we'll see how it goes.
