The Pontus PAC-7002B has a removable MP3 player type design I think we all are dreaming of. Sadly, the MP3 player it uses is a flash based unit with 512mb of storage, but hey, at least it's a start in the direction of an in dash head unit with a removable hard drive based MP3 player for storage. With the way the competition is slowly eeking up to what empeg was thinking years back,we should see the hard drive unit around 2010 or so.

Said it before and I'll say it again, I can't f'n believe no one has made an iPod dockable head unit like that. Slide it in, flip up face, done. The only electronics would be an amp and a small bit to interface to the iPod menus. Profit?

I'm amazed apple haven't produced one themselves iCar or something. Seems the next logical step for them now that they have make iPod a household name and got themselves an instant market.

But won't you hear the typical response of "DIN is dead thanks to car manufacturers heavily integrating their head units"?

It would be hysterical to see Apple release an iCar single-DIN dock-with-display, forcing all car manufacturers back to using DIN slots in their cars. Antiquating "antiquated" technology just like Microsoft "made the keyboard obselete" with the groundbreaking technology that is handwriting. (I'm stretching the situation, I know, but the point is the same).

Or release an iPod with built-in bluetooth so you can leave the iPod in your pocket and still have room for whatever guts you wanted (CD tray, etc). Then you can not only sell licensing to car stereo makers for the iPod bluetooth interface but you could sell bluetooth iPods and bluetooth iPod headphones.

Do they have this already?

Does Bluetooth have enough bandwidth to transmit music? I thought I'd read someplace that it didn't. It seems 723kbps even with the old standard, 2.1Mbps with the new, so maybe so.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

Divide by 3 or 4 to get attainable throughput. The best I've ever gotten is around 70k BITS/sec here, but I haven't worked extensively with it.

Yeah, there are quite a few products transmitting music over bluetooth now. We're starting to see that A2DP standard in cell phones and one or two MP3 players now.

But, are these subject to the same "line of sight" requirements as my Treo phone and Treo bluetooth headset? With the phone in my left pocket and headset on my right ear, there's slight crackling. For music, that would be terrible.

Or does my headset/phone just stink? Or can the Treo send MP3s to fancy bluetooth headphones....... hm.....

It might be your headset or environment. I've accidentally walked out of the room while wearing my headset only to realize I've left the phone sitting on a desk. I've gotten a signal from about 15-20 feet. The crackling didn't start until about 10 feet.

That was what I was seeing when using my bluetooh headphones. I've been able to get to about 30 feet before the sound started to cut out. I worried that I might forget my MP3 player somewhere public.
