I have read that the empeg will take a pre-amplified aux input from an existing head unit and that the empeg has front and rear 'pre-amp' outputs going to an amp.

is the aux input just a stereo input, or does it accept front and rear inputs ?

my main reason for asking is that my head unit only has the single stereo signal coming out, and i want to know if the empeg will automatically mirror that signal to the front and rear outputs, or whether i will have to split the output of the head unit and artificially mirror the signal myself.

It's just Left & Right input. The empeg then allows you to fade this front/rear as with the mp3/tuner signal.
