Will the Rio Karma charge its battery through the USB connection, or does it only charge through the AC-->DC plug in adapter?

Only through the adapter. USB doesn't provide enough current to run the disk and the screen and the charger simultaneously; the charger provides four times the USB current. (I did suggest at one point at least trickle-charging the battery over USB, but the limited situations in which it'd be useful didn't justify the extra hardware and software work.)

That and charger chips which did all the fun work of splitting the USB supply into system load current and charger current didn't exist when the Karma was made...

There were a lot of things I did differently on the Karma's successors, but the way the cookie crumbled involved none of them ever getting to market frown

The Karma was still a great product though, I dug it out a month or so back, put a new battery in there and was impressing everyone at work with how damn responsive that thing was!

What I'd give for proper on-the-fly playlist management on the iPhone iPod app frown

At some point (and especially if anything happened to the Vibez, touch wood) I intend to do this: http://www.riovolution.org/thread/1175

From what I understand, it is supposed to have the same feature set of playlist management on the iPad in 3.2. Should mean it's possible to edit existing playlists and create new ones. Wikipedia also says support for nested playlists (finally).

That is pretty much what I thought it was, which means it doesn't do what I want it to.

I don't want to mess about with playlists, I just want it to have a running playlist like the empeg or Squeezebox. I want to be able to add tracks/albums to the running order without first having to create a playlist and switch into edit mode every time I want to add a track/album.

Unfortunately I don't expect Apple to ever provide me with this functionality.

Ahh, right. Closest thing Apple offers is the iTunes DJ on the desktop side, and even that is limited to 100 songs.

My battery kind of tried to explode on me. I glanced over at the Karma the other day and noticed it looked a bit odd. I walked over to check it out and discovered that the battery had expanded about 3x!

I personally suspect this to be the leading root cause of HDD failures. But that's just me.

I wonder how well an updated Karma would sell today, including dual procs for maximum responsiveness, full vibez 1.19 features, and a crap load of storage space. Hmmmmmm.....

Umm, the Karma already had dual procs for maximum responsiveness. To get any more responsive... well... **** Everything, We're Doing Five CPUs (NSFW@theonion).

Right, that's my point. The vibez was single, right? Sometimes I think the vibez could really use that second proc to eliminate some of its hangups that didn't seem to bother the Karma. (My vibez is my everyday player, Karma is my back up for when my vibez dies and I can't get a replacement.)

Yeah I had not used mine for a while and was going to use it after the Carbon died. I pulled it out of the cabinet and the case was split open because the battery expanded.

Just replace the battery if you can, mine was the same way but it's now fine (I stuck an original iPhone battery in there... slightly smaller but works fine)

Be extraordinarily careful on reassembly of the case or you will break the lock switch. You probably will anyway... smile
