I just recently upgraded to 1.03. When I took the unit back to car and started playing it, I noticed at one point it started so squeak and squeal (like there was a bad mp3 in it, but the file in question now plays fine) and then it suddenly blew away the artist tags for every song in the playlist. The tag was gone from the display, and when I checked it with emplode, it was gone from the playlist entries for each song too.

Since the tags seem to be stored with the fid, and not just with the playlist, the occurence seems even more bizarre. Anyone else seen this ?

Ouch! I have not seen this problem elsewhere, but you might want to look into disk problems. Do you have any problems booting or in synchronizing? If you are running developer, you might want to do a fsck on your disks.

The disks should not be mounted for writing in the car - and to perform such a selective data modification is exceptionally strange.

I'm running the consumer image. I suppose there's some way to do an fsck in that too ? (don't have the manual handy, so I can't RTFM)

I even went to other playlists and came back to this one to see if was just a display/temporary problem. (when it first happened in the car).

weird.

To remove the artist whilst keeping everything else ok would require a very unlikely event - removing of line line of text in the metadata file that goes with every file.

Have you tried connecting with emplode and doing a sync (don't change anything, just sync). This should rebuild the database - maybe something got upset?

Just keep sync'ing until it does a check... IIRC, it per default makes a fsck every 20th sync.
(Though it seems to have an uncanny feeling for the times when you're in a hurry and only
intended to toss on a few new songs before rushing out... )
