In reading the FAQ at riocar.org I reread the part about the temp sense not implemented yet. Does anyone know if it's going to be implemented in v2 somewhere?

I believe that's the first time someone has dared use a link as a pun source.

If you're not careful, we could get carried away with this kind of thing.

He's still right though - where's the temperature sensitive shutdown capability in V2.0?

No plans, no. I find when 2.0 is running properly (ie, spinning the drive down more agressively, etc) my player runs significantly cooler.

To tell you the truth, my player has been in some hot places left for hours and no problem except the slipping vol. button.
What I'm worried about isn't the too hot but too cold. I'm more worried about the disks freezing up since the low end temp advisory is only 40`F and it gets close to 0`F around here. I didn't seem to have any problems last year but it was pretty mild as far as cold temps. go. any problems with disks locking up?

I don't recommend doing this... but I have started my player up at temperatures colder than -10 degrees F. Only one time (probably at around -15 degrees) did it fail to start. I pulled it out of the dash and set it on the floor by the heater output for about three minutes, and then it fired right up.

What was the reason the temp sense was never used in the software? I forget now, it's been such a long time.....

Er, it never gets that warm/cold in the UK, so we forgot?

Then you should have put in a humidity sensor instead!

If the hardware is there, then why not implement it, it'd be interesting and also useful for some, obviously who (try to) start up their player in sub minus conditions.

I remember Hugo saying the output of this sensor can be way off the actual temperature...

Idea! Implement something like the 'no harddisk' message:

Warning! Temperature limits reached at: xx.x

With Tux sweating or freezing.
Or put up an icon like the harddisk one that puts the current temperature on the display...?

Can both be done à la empanim and clock overlay, though!

We found an issue with the temperature sensor. Some of them have reprogrammed themselves (bizarrely!) into a different operating mode, and the only way to reset them is to desolder a pin. We have no plans to use this component in the player software.

(For reassurance, there is no anomoly in the failure rate of units used in extremely hot or extremely cold territories. The temperature sensor was included before we had any units in the field, but this has proven to be a non-issue).

I'm more concerned with temperature sensitive startup capability for our typical Canadian winter temperatures of -20C (or lower).

But both of these are trivial to implement as a kernel add-on. I may add them to my kernel menu system, with a choice of user-selectable thresholds perhaps (to compensate for the reported variations in sensor behaviour).

As a starting point, v23 of my patches now displays the current sensor reading from the menu, under "Vital Signs".

Another reason not to leave it in the car
