This is a complete pipe dream, but I wish that /dev/audio could accept audio writes in formats other than 44.1 khz stereo. The kernel source claims this is a wish list item and I'd like to see this in a future release.

No plans; the place for sample rate conversion is really in user-space, as decent SRC uses a non-trivial amount of CPU time.

You could probably find some SRC code about and put it inbetween your non-44k1 app and /dev/dsp?
