Why is today (dec 26th) called "boxing day" in Brittain? I've known this for a long time, but I've never known the meaning...
Anyone care to enlighten me?

Oddly enough, Canada has boxing day today also, but not the US.

I've always been a little dismayed that there's no Boxing Day 2 (the sequel) on January 2nd!

Ugh, back to work tomorrow...

At least they give you January 1 off to recover from your hangover.

To me, Boxing Day means shopping! My parents are in Canada, and when I'm up there during Christmas, I make sure to get out and shop on Boxing Day. Lines are horrendous, but the deals are unbelieveable. The US-->Canadian conversion is pretty nice too.

Well here in New Zealand [and Australia too I think], we have as you put it "Boxing day 2" on January 2.
[its called 'The Day after New Years Day' - kind of unoriginal]

Its a public holiday like Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years day.

Of course its summer here so it makes sense to have some public holidays at this time.

Pity the weather here hasn't woken up to the fact its summer yet :-(((

"Boxing Day" sales normally last at least a week now. :) And up until a few years ago, it was illegal to open a retail business on a holiday (or Sunday for that matter), so all the "Boxing Day" sales were actually the day-after Boxing Day. :)
