How about a 100 Megabit/second ethernet port? This would be an order of magnitude improvement
over USB and a huge boon when dealing with multi-GB data transfers.

This isn't really likely - ethernet simply isn't plug-n-play, which is important for non-computer types. We'd love to put a port on there, but only a small percentage of users would end up using it.

The only thing we can offer on this is that we're looking at the 2.3 kernels to see if we can add an empeg USB driver to linux, allowing you to run PPP over the USB link, which gives a decent amount of speed - plus you could ftp, telnet, etc to the empeg then.

This does again, unfortunately, require USB support in the OS of the machine doing the downloads though, surely? Under NT 4 I'm stuffed. All my other UNIX machines don't have USB, either...

Yes, you need USB support. However, upgrading to NT2000 is easier than us producing a new board with ethernet on it.

Hang on, what am I saying? That should be "upgrading", not upgrading. ;)

I think the "upgrading" comment says it all... :-)

I'm going to upgrade from NT4, but I'm not looking in
Microsoft's direction!

Jim.

I'm on Win95 and have absolutely no interest in Win98 or Win2000. I think I'll install a temporary copy of Win98 upload the majority of tracks via USB and then revert to Win95 and serial for maintenance of my collection.

If you're going to use personal invective instead of giving a technical or practical reason why I shouldn't, could you at least use correct grammar? It's doubly insulting.

How's this for a practical reason? There is absolutely nothing to be gained by installing a "temporary" copy of win98 onto your machine and still run win95 when you're not updating the empeg. really. win98 has numerious features not found in win95 and if you already have that copy to make a temp install then you've already either paid for it or gotten a pirated version either way you already have win98 so go ahead and use the thing. win2000 i can understand. since win2000 will be based on the winnt core it won't be as compatible as win98 you might(will) lose the ability to play a lot of games and things. but going from win95-win98. I personally don't see any reason for not switching if you're going to use it anyway.

maybe you have some weird compatibility problem, care to explain?

OK, so I don't really care one way or the other because I avoid Windows at all cost (MacOS or a Linux/Unix variant, but no windows), but I know several people who upgraded to 98 and then dumped it cuz its so buggy and incompatable with software they were running. After 3 years of bug fixes, microsloth was finally approaching a decent level of stability in Win95, and maybe by the time 2000 comes out, 98 will be respectibly stable. Of course, i see an easier solution to all of these problems, but this isnt an advocacy post so ill leave it at that.

For anyone who is interested, the most stable release of win95 never shipped with a computer or in a Win95 box. It only shipped with VirtualPC, the emulation software for the mac. The cds were burned a couple months before win98 shipped and they didnt want competition between their own products. If you think dropping from win98 to win95 is crazy, Ive met people who dropped win98 and bought virtualPC to get the later release of win95 so they could run it on their pc. they had a copy of 95 and didnt even have a mac. i get harassed for "blind loyalty" to a platform, but...nevermind.

I agree with this comment, especially now with the new 25 Gig laptop hard drives available from IBM ... you can have *50* Gigs in
your Empeg player now... how long would 50 Gigs take to transfer over USB? I would also like to use the unit to transfer data
between my home and office computers .... I really do not think I would use the serial connector for tranfers... way too slow, for Admin
purposes only.... hmm.... I REALLY like the idea of having *ALL* of my CDs in the player a one time....

That's not the point, really - the idea is that you *don't* put gigs on it on a daily basis - remembering that even 1Gb will take you 17 hours to listen to...

You'll probably have a multi-gb transfer when you first get the unit, to put your collection on there, but after that it's just maintenance.
