I'm in a bit of a stuck place here. I've decided to purchase an additional Rio Car while I stil can. I want to get the 60 since its only $100 more for 30gig more. Problem is that the online store lists it as out of stock. They list the 30 in stock though.

I'm wondering if I should go for the (as close as I can get to) 'sure thing' 30 or try for a 60 and see if any 30s are left if the 60 is out of stock.

Suggestions? Thoughts? Help?

Isn't the 60 two 30G drives? If so, Pricewatch lists a 30GB drive (2.5" Laptop) from Fujitsu for $129. So, if th e30s are listed in stock and you really want to get one, $29 (+ ship) more would get you your other 30GB

Yeah but FWIW the warranty would be lost...

I'd play safe and order one which is available.

Order both via two orders. Sell extra one for cost to someone in Europe, or simply return it if you wish. DR has had such terrible service that I wouldn't feel bad returning something...

BTW, no luck with OOS orders in the last week, but YMMV.

Well, if you really want only a Fujitsu drive..

Myself, I would settle for nothing less than the IBM TravelStar units.. incredibly robust, cool, and FAST!! I have several Fujitsu drives around (2.5") and they are by far the slowest clunkers in the collection. I got a couple of 60g Empegs just so I could cannibalize the drives to replace the Fujitsu's in some of my other machinery. Of course, the Empeg is also nice to have around..

I just think of one of the 60g units as a nice, portable system backup device.. slightly slower than tape (because the ethernet is only 10mb/sec), but way better for random access / differential backups etc..

Cheers

I bought myself a 30GB spare unit for several reasons:

My current collection of ripped MP3s is hovering around 20GB, so a 30GB unit gives me some headroom. By the time I'm getting full, I'd want to buy myself an IBM 48GB or (if available/affordable) a 60GB disk to get loads of future capacity. You mention that your current Empeg is only 20GB. I'd say buy the 30GB now, and then when you need more space, see what hard drive prices are and do a self-upgrade.

I went ahead with the 30gig purchase. I wish I could afford to get both, but I can't blow my budget any more than I already have. Already bought a total of three units, one of which I sold to a fried for cost (and was stolen from said friend w/in 4 days). I just want to be real sure I have an 'extra', so I went with the sure thing (hopefully) 30gig.

yup, I did a search on 'stolen' and got in touch with them to inform them of the serial number. Luckily I had written that down before selling the unit. My friend hadn't written it down.

Ok, let's see:
price difference between 30G and 60G model: $100
Price for 30G HD: $200

So even if you want a 30, just buy the 60 and sell one of the drives at cost to somebody here who is running out of room.
