It just occured to me... if anytime an Empeg disk defrag is needed, how can it be done?
And By the way... still waiting for the new site :-)

Empeg uses an ext2 file system. This is not some microsoft toy file system and so doesn't really require defragging. (I am not sure that the ext2 defragger is even maintained any more).

Andy.

For what it's worth; the defrag tool for linux was originally written for the 'ext' file system (the precursor(sp?) to the current 'ext2' filesystem). It's been a while since I looked at it, but I recall that the docs for the defrag tool strongly recommended against using it on an ext2 filesystem. As I understand it; the ext2 filesystem does not require defragmentation.

Actually, if you fsck an empeg disk, it shows a high percentage of fragmentation; this is because the frag percentage is calculated on the number of files with at least 1 frag in them. As the empeg's disk is full of "huge" (compared to average fs's) files, it's very likely that many may have at at least 1 frag in them.

It's not an issue, and doesn't impact performance. Defragging isn't necessary.
