I'm confused. (quip away at that if you must)

If the unit is under warranty, and an internal component failed (presumably through no fault of the owner), how is that "not covered"?

He may have dropped it and broke the nipple off the screen :-(

Re: Warranty Repair to cost $340 CANADIAN!!! - 17/07/2002 21:48

DemonSeed... Is the broken part... is it the one described here?

If so, then (a) I understand why it's so expensive, and (b) I don't see how it could be covered under warranty, since only serious physical abuse could cause that problem.

How did it get broken?

I don't even know what you're all worked up about. $340 Canadian? Isn't that like only $12 US?

Re: Warranty Repair to cost $340 CANADIAN!!! - 19/07/2002 09:35

Is there another way we can protect these things? Like put some sort of foam or rubber around them so they don't break. This is making me a little paranoid that it may happen to me sometime.

Re: Warranty Repair to cost $340 CANADIAN!!! - 19/07/2002 10:11

I have dropped both my Empeg Mk1 and my Empeg Mk2 multiple times now. Never very far (say, from about hip-height), and always in the canvas carrying case, but they were serious drops nonetheless.

The worst that has ever happened has been:

- Cracked faceplate corner on the Mk1.
- Loosened IDE cable.

I've never had the fill nipple break from a drop. It would have to be a pretty hard drop, or just at the right angle.

I dropped mine once in the case. Broke the nipple and it was US$100 plus shipping to repair. Then it was other stuff acting up, so I sent it back again, on the third trip back over the pond we (empeg and I) struck a deal to replace it for the cost of shipping since it had gotten to about US$400 so far for shipping and repair costs trying to get it working properly.

Moral: Don't drop your empeg unless you have money to burn...

Corollary: If you do have money to burn, still don't drop your empeg, and send your overages my way.

(no i did not do the button hack)

Well, then, what did you do?

Since you're paying for it anyway, there's no need to be secretive about it. I'm curious just so I can make sure the FAQ is accurate on all the things that might make the display go blank.

Hi John Why would you have to pay if the display got damaged during shipping?I need to send my player in for another problem and im now worried if it gets damaged during shipping ill have to pay. I think Dave told me they only insure it for$ 100US ?So they dont have to pay extra taxes or whatever.Im a little nervous also that if it gets lost that they will only pay what it is insured for and not what its worth. Anyone else have this happen to them?

Re: Warranty Repair to cost $340 CANADIAN!!! - 20/07/2002 23:48

Hey Mike

Here's the story...I was in Bosnia on a peacekeeping mission. I learned about the Empeg while I was there and ordered one. I had severe problems getting it to clear Croatian customs so my package was shipped back to Empeg. Soon afterwards I went home to Canada to visit my parents on leave. They live in Nova Scotia. I asked the Empeg people to redirect the player there, which they did, free of charge.

I received my player finally in Nova Scotia but still had to have it shipped to Windsor, Ontario (where I was to take leave after my tour). The Empeg box I received was extremely badly damaged going from England to Croatia and back again...so when I finally received my player in Nova Scotia (it was lost by both TNT and Purolator), the box was pretty well a write off (crushed on all sides and the inside supports for the player gone). I repackaged the damaged Empeg box in a bigger box with foam peanuts and made arrangements to have it shipped to Windsor to coincide with my arrival back there on leave.

Because of the way I placed the player in the package (VFD face up), it was subseptable to crush damage from the top and that's exactly what happened. I received my player in Windsor and the nipple was broken off due to crush pressure on the VFD. I f*cking hate how courriers mishandle the packages they're entrusted to. I realize now that I should have claimed the damage from the courrier but I was too niave to pursue it. The cost of the repair to replace the VFD plus the shipping to England and back totalled about $300 CDN. My bad eh?

One thing that was really nice tho..when I got my player back from the repair, the box it came in was brand new...the Empeg guys replaced my original box. It was really nice to see the box as it should have been received when I first made my order......

You got the wrong end of the stick. We don't use courier insurance at all - WE take the risk. You don't have to worry at all.

Re: Warranty Repair to cost $340 CANADIAN!!! - 23/07/2002 16:33

If it helps any, it's VERY rare for players to sustain serious damage in shipping. Dislodged hard disk cables are not uncommon, but that's no big deal. We've only ever had a couple of players that have looked as though they fell out of the plane from 30,000 feet.

I hope I didn't just curse your shipment!

Haha, I love all these old posts. Get to see the old avitars and old "BBS Status"s.

I was doing a preliminary search for a lit button question I wanted to ask and found this old gem. With such classic quotes as: "They also need to get around the fact that cars are just too damn noisy for really good VR, and it is hoped that products like that third-party mic will allow this. We'll just have to see." Haha, still waitin'.
