Empeg runs cooler on different power supply?

Empeg runs cooler on different power supply? - 23/08/2002 15:55

I know this sounds strange, but I have started using a different power supply for my empeg it is the same voltage and amperage, but for some reason the emeg runs at about 34c/93f with this power supply. With the stock power supply it runs at about 110f. The only difference between the supplys is that the original one is a small switching supply and the other is a full size transformer type. Any ideas?

I have noticed this as well. The difference between the car's power, one home power supply, and a different home power supply, seems to change the overall operating temp of the unit.

Perhaps to do with supply voltage?

Is the full sized transformer one regulated or not? If it isn't then the voltage may drop because of the load.

The transformer one is regulated, I didn't want to use a non regualted one because it would have too much ripple and the voltage wouldn't be stable.

Hmm... Wierd. No idea then

It is strange, the power supply came from mcm electronics I got it for $2.00 it was a special in a sale flyer, it says cambridge soundworks and it's model tead-48-121000ut 12v 1amp so I guess it came with computer speakers. If it was intended for speakers it should have very good regulation.

I have a similar one for the Cambridge Soundworks speakers I've got. Really heavy PSU.

Don't see why it makes a difference if they're both regulated, same voltage and current though. I've actually replaced most of my PSU's with SMPS ones because they're usually much smaller.

I know, thats why I think It's really wierd, and Tony said he has noticed the same thing. Its very strange. The only thing that would be differnent between them is that the one with the transformer is isolated better from the empeg.

Not having looked at this before, my first guess would be noise. There must be filtering and regulation going on in the Empeg, so a switching power supply (usually containing some amount of high frequency noise) could be causing oscillation in the Empeg's voltage regulation; i.e. heat.
Just a guess...

Different ground potential? So with the SMPS one there is a slight current flowing through the empeg from/to the amp?

I've noticed this as well. I have a power supply here that will make the empeg hot to the touch (!?) and another one that leaves it fairly cool. My question is, what is the ideal empeg power supply? And where can we purchase one?

The power supply that came with my original MkII makes it get quite hot. The power supply that came with my MkIIa, however, has no such problem.

For what it's worth...
