Unofficial Empeg Repair in Philly Area - 29/08/2002 14:11

I'm in the Philadelphia area on a trip and using my empeg in the car with a tape adapter and inverter. But something in the left RCA (home) out broke and I only get sound out of that channel if I push the jack up so that it touches the housing of the empeg. I think that it happened when I left it is the sun for about a half hour on a 80 degree day... but I can't imaging that it overheated or any components are broken. I think it is just a weak solder joint that went in the heat. I've never opened it so I'm looking for someone in the area that has experience and equipment to help me fix this inconvience.

If no one in the Philadelphia area is able to help I'm going to be in the Seattle area after the 11th of Sept. Thanks for any help.

I had a similar problem on my empeg due to a tight RCA cable damaging the solder between the connector and the main board. The empeg folks fixed it in a jiffy (no, not that jiffy). That was under warranty, so I can't speak as to the price of that fix. Give them an email and I'm sure they can tell you.

That's what I think the problem is. I don't want to send it to the UK unless it is the only option. Plus my unit is out of warrantee and I'm hoping to find someone who is willing to help me fix the solder... I'm pretty sure that's the problem because I can make it work by touching the outer sleeve of the RCA to the empeg's housing.

Wish I could help, but anything smaller than sweating copper pipes is beyond my soldering skills.

Shipping the player to the UK and back would cost 75UKP (about 110USD). The repair itself is minor.

Anyone with expereince of SMT electronics should be able to handle it. There are a series of videos in the FAQ that show how to dismantle the player.

Do you guys offer a discount shipping method or do you have some Sweet Deal with fed ex? I've only had waranty work done once, and I was really happy with the super-priority-fed-ex, but would have been fine waiting another day or two... If I had to ship it out of waranty and it was my dime, I'd care more...

Greetings!

My guess is that it is the international involvement that makes FedEx easier to deal with.

We have a good deal with FedEx, so it works out to only a few pounds more to ship overnight. The cost is increased slightly becaure we pay an additional fee for them arranging a collection from you.

Some customers ship the player themselves, then just pay us for the return shipping. If you have an account with FedEx, we can put the return shipment on that. We can also ship by other carriers if you have an account, but you have to ask nicely as it means extra paperwork for me.
