Make sure you don't have multiple programs connected to the com/serial port. You can only connect with one program at once over the com/serial port, so make sure HyperTerminal and other similar programs are closed or disconnected from the com/serial port.

Yeah, something is wrong with your serial port or the cable. Go through this and see what's up.

Right, so there's something wrong with the serial connection. That's why the upgrade doesn't work. Go through the text in the Hyperterminal FAQ entry and read each paragraph carefully and do all of the troubleshooting. If Hypterterminal doesn't work, then the upgrade won't work. If Hypterterminal works, then the upgrade should work.

When it works, you should see a bunch of text scroll by in Hyperterminal. The Ctrl-T thing is way too far along in the troubleshooting process. Back up a few paragraphs.

the device manager says that the serial ports are working properly, but still i get nothing in hyperterminal. im stumped. should the little blue light be lit on the back?

should the little blue light be lit on the back?
Only if you've got a working ethernet connection. The blue light is the ethernet "Link" light. It has nothing to do with the serial port.

Are you sure your serial cable is good? Are you sure it's a null-modem cable? Are you sure it's plugged in correctly? Has the serial cable ever worked before, or is this the first time you've tried it?

hehe... I wouldn't take that bet. I was pulling my hair one one day because I couldn't get a serial connection with a known good serial cable. But then I found the one that shipped with my Rio and it worked like a charm.

The lesson learned: Just because the cable *looked* like a serial cable, doesn't mean it is.

I'd agree there, but it still theoretically could be other problems.

Try doing the upgrade on a different computer and/or with a different cable.

Re: "car player not found" when trying to upgrade? - 18/03/2003 13:22

That's the wrong thing. You need a null modem cable (RatShack doesn't seem to carry one), but, assuming you can't return what you've got, it'd be cheaper to buy a null modem adapter. Even if you can, the adapter will provide you with two different attachments (if you need to use the cable elsewhere), at the expense of having a somewhat bulky and inconvenient adapter tacked on for the empeg.

thanks a lot. i appreciate the help. do i need to put an adapter at each end of the cable or just one end?

Re: "car player not found" when trying to upgrade? - 18/03/2003 14:05

Just one end - otherwise you would be back to the same situation as without an adapter.
