Empeg BBS Outages - 08/09/2003 16:13

I am getting an error while accessing the Empeg BBS, http://empeg.comms.net/php/. I can log in/access once a day then I cannot access the site anymore. Over at the ReceiverBBS some folks over there are having problem accessing this site also.

The error is somethiong like... "Sorry, your DNS server is still pointing to this old server. Flush your DNS cache if possible and try again.
If this error persists, the only solution is to try again later."

I was having this problem as well. I fixed it by adding

66.219.41.221 empeg.comms.net

To the hosts file In 2000 / XP here is the path to the file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

yes I having the same issue at home with my ISP, DNS propagation isn't exactly 24-48hrs or max 72hrs so some ISP's DNS servers will still have issues reaching the site.
I run a couple of DNS servers at work and the change has propagated to them fine, I use a top level DNS server in NZ as a forwarder.

The problem is that NS-5.REGISTRY.KNOWTION.net (one of the DNS servers for empeg.comms.net) is STILL giving out the old IP address. There are 5 DNS servers for the domain and it is pot luck which one you will end up getting the address from.

I have contacted Paul about this, as he has access to the DNS files for comms.net.

I did that, I still get the "hi" webpage.
nslookup still resolves to the old IP.

I typed in the 66.219.41.221 ip in firebird, still get the "hi" page

You can't go strait to the IP as they're named based virtual hosts. If you put it in your host file and reboot, it should work. The "hi" page is actually being served by the right server, i beleive. I had issues until i put the last dot on the end so it looks like:
66.219.41.221 empeg.comms.net.
but that shouldn't be necessary. Mozilla did require a reboot before it would work, while IE worked immediatly.

I added this IP to the host file last eve and I have had no problems since.

for some reason even adding to my hosts file, I still get the bad ip
I used my works ISP's DNS server, resolves fine to the correct ip when I issue a nslookup, but still browsing to the board still takes me to the "hi" or "wrong DNS page". Yes cleared all internet history and cached pages. Even tried with lynx.

I've resorted to using IE through my work Citrix connection at least my DNS there has it right

Do you have a proxy configured? Maybe the proxy needs to have its DNS refreshed?

Yeah, in order to get the corrected IP to come up, I had to change the hosts file on my proxy/firewall server, then restart the proxy server software (service).

From Paul:

All of the servers listed as authorative for comms.net show the correct
address:

empeg.comms.net has address 66.219.41.221
empeg.comms.net has address 66.219.41.221
empeg.comms.net has address 66.219.41.221
empeg.comms.net has address 66.219.41.221
empeg.comms.net has address 66.219.41.221

However this tool shows some servers have a cached address:

http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ispdns.ch?name=empeg.comms.net&type=A

Which is strange because the TTL is set to a day so should have timed out by
now. The only problem I could see is one of the authorative servers is
currently down.

Cheers

ns-5 is now giving me a servfail and ns-4 (still) does not respond.
