In-Dash and Home MP3 player better than Empeg - 02/08/2000 20:58

eBay has a new auction up for an "In-Dash and Home MP3 player better than Empeg". If I remember the last discussion on this item, it was said to be a decent idea, but not that great. To me, it looks underpowered, and who knows how well that 3.5 inch hard drive is protected.

Yeah, I've looked at that player's web site before. I think we discussed it in the "ICE" forum a while back.

Good basic idea (use an off-the-shelf removable drive slide and add an MP3 player to the front of it), but there are some issues with its design that make it less suitable for automotive use than the Empeg:

- Not shock-mounted.
- Drive is a desktop drive, not a laptop drive. Such drives have worse environmental tolerances (G, Temp) than laptop drives.
- Installation depth may be too long for some vehicles.

...not to mention I'm guessing the software won't be nearly as complete as empeg's...

People will say anything on ebay to sell something..

Yeah, like all those "800 Watt computer speakers". Yeah, right.

I think it's something like 11" deep whereas most cars can only take 5-7" of in-dash space.

Hey don't laugh... I got a set of 120 WATT Speakers on my desktop right now. It says so on the box damnit!

Nice and compact too... together they are about the size of a carton of cigarettes.

Please note the Sarcasm above. :) 120 Watts, yeah right... maybe a typo there and is was supposed to say 12.0 Watts.

Actually, it's not technically a typo or a falsity. It's just manipulation.

This is a sort-of joke over at the Klipsch ProMedia Board. The ProMedias have a wattage of 400. This is less decieving because it is RMS wattage.

Whenever you see these incredibly high wattages on ebay, however, it means "peak" wattage. They aren't really lying, but it's a little deceitful

Actually my home 'puter is hooked up to my home stereo system... with a speaker on each side of the 'puter... each one is the size of the fridge section (Lower half) of your common fridge bottom, freezer top refridgerator. And there have been times when myself or my girlfriend have almost landed on the floor or went through the ceiling.

(Too bad those speakers don't have the best sound quality, they do fine for me though! )

Yeah sorta like my old cars front door speakers.

60 WATTS
then in small lettering...
30 Watts per speaker
15 Watts RMS.

Kind of misleading alright
