5th Empeg Owner's Meet, July 9/10/11 2004 - 22/01/2004 09:19

I have decided to run the Amersfoort owner's meet again this year (Loud cheers and roars of crowd approval). For now there are no real details other than the date of the weekend, so make a note in your diaries and START PLANNING NOW.

I'll keep you posted in the coming weeks.

Although things aren't sparkling here, I'd like to let you know that I am pretty cheerful, warm, and fed, and I am healthy (if somewhat bored). I'm missing you all and try to look in here occasionally when possible. I have no net connection and I am no longer living at my previous address, but I am working on changing this. Thanks to all who have sent good wishes, it is GREATLY appreciated.

TTFN!

I am so definately there Rob! Last year was amazing I know this year is going to be just as good if not better! I've been waiting since the last one for the announcement of this!

There'll be a car coming over from Manchester, probably over to Hull if anyone's interested? (Christian?)

I'm pretty sure our local beer emporium has Hoegaarden.

I bet the Brickskeller does too. I only know about them because my wife went drinking with her Swedish teacher there the same weekend I went to New York during the blackout...

Re: 5th Empeg Owner's Meet, July 9/10/11 2004 - 22/01/2004 20:34

Walmart around here sells Yuengling for $7.50/case, so I have little reason to go to a beer store normally. I guess I will scope out some local distributors.

Anyway, I have just booked a flight to AMS on Singapore Air. A bit more expensive than BA, but the flight is direct. The Continental flight I took last year doubled in price for some crappy reason. Can you tell I'm excited?

image, mtempsch, self: Hahaha, hilarious.

The other Rob(ricc): Heck yeah Hoegaarden. I keep my house STOCKED with cases of that stuff!

Laura: Need a "boyfriend" to secure your neighboring plane seat from annoying random strangers who don't shut up?

But I'm sure I can figure out the logistics! Anyway, if anyone wants to stay in Amsterdam for a couple of days afterwards, I can accomodate 3 or 4 people...

I just point out (Cris, Andy and anyone else from Northern England) that I've finished booking a week in Holland, using trains & planes and ending at the meet, and it looks like a third cheaper than the package using the Hull - Rotterdam ferry, last year.
Nice ferry though, like a mini cruise, did I have a hangover leaving the ship, both ways.

Yeah, that's after how close he came to tonking it into the corner of Empeg Towers as it came off the low-loader. I suspect he felt he needed to amortise the cost of buying it over more than four seconds of actual use...

Re: 5th Empeg Owner's Meet, July 9/10/11 2004 - 27/01/2004 09:01

Oh blimey!! What have I done!

Working on:

- sponsorship, from an airline that might mean fares reduction
- sponsorship from the brewery (I don't have to tell you what that means)
- the hotel (Looks like we will be getting the rooms even cheaper than last year)

Good to see so many people are interested: I am astonished that people Are re-arranging their summer schedules to fit around this!

I was planning on keeping this mainly the same formula: however, since a fair number of people are coming for the 4th or 5th time, I am bothered it might be a bit "samey". Have a think and let me know what your opinion is.

Keep up the enthusiasm!!

I can’t speak for everybody, but the sameness to last year’s event is what I’m coming for. We've built the boxette up with our glowing impressions of last year. I've seen her studying the group photo, but I'm not sure who it is she fancies!

I didn't stay long enough to have beer there, but that must have been "witbier".
There are other white beers, like Wieckse Witte and Dentergems. Personally,
I think Dentergems is the best in its category.

Weissbier ?

I can strongly recommend Weissbier from Schneider und sohn, and ofcourse "Erdinger hefe hell". But my alltime favorite is weissbier from the Neckar müller in Tübingen, just south of Stuttgart - its brewed in the bar!

Re: Hoegaarden - 29/01/2004 05:09

Weissbier is good too, but there's quite a distinction between Belgian witbier
and German Weissbier. Witbier has a distinct sour taste, where as Weissbier
tastes more like regular beer. That's probably because the Belgians can put
all the chemicals in it they like, while German beer has to conform to the
Reinheitsgebot.

Are these dates set in stone now? I'm about to book the ferry tickets ...and bugger me they're expensive.

It looks like SWMBO and her best friend will be coming too. Although they'll probably only hang around for the BBQ and ribs. I think the opporunity to explore the 'dam and get completely mullered is too good to pass up.

That does mean there's a seat available from Manchester down the M62 to Hull. I don't know wether Steve will be able to make it this year as he's likely to be down in Devon at the time.

I'd admit there is a big difference between Witbier and Weissbier - If i have the choice, i'd go for a Wiessbier. It's the only beer type i can continue to drink on and on for a whole days without getting tired of it.

I just repeat my offer - my place is in the center of Amsterdam, and I can accommodate a couple in the guest room, and 2 or 3 people in the library/movie room if needed...

When I was a student, the Heffers bookshop next-door to Trinity -- and thus just yards from the room in Whewell's Court where Philby, Burgess, MacLean and Blunt used to meet -- had, in the window, a pile of copies of a book called "The KGB -- The Inside Story". Propped up against it was a little card, "Local Author".

Hey Rob, have you figured out where you're staying around AMS on Thursday? We could split a room (or not, no biggie), and perhaps I might hitch a lift with you over to Amersfoort on Friday?

Re: 5th Empeg Owner's Meet, July 9/10/11 2004 - 02/02/2004 12:53

I think I announced earlier that I gave the guest room available, and if needed, I can definitely accommodate a couple of people in the video room/library. So far neither have been claimed.

Re: 5th Empeg Owner's Meet, July 9/10/11 2004 - 02/02/2004 13:24

Whatever. I can also dump the car in Amersfoort and then take public transit into Amsterdam. Having a car was good last year for driving around and speeding back to the airport, so I got one again this year.

Naturally, I rented a tiny car (by US standards) so the Julfcave should work also. At the moment I think it's most likely I will sleep in Amersfoort on Thursday.

Might take you up on that. As a matter of fact i'm usually in the south of Germany two or three times a year, as i have a company in Tübingen not so far from Freiburg. Usually i stay at my German CEOs house, or at the Hotel Domizil in Tübingen, where there is a lovely view to the Neckar. It could be cool meeting sometime though. I'll let you know next time i'm down there.

I really miss being there. I've spend my last two summer vacations in the black forrest area, and plan on going again this year.

Re: Mark's Excellent Adventure: photos! - 04/02/2004 07:14

Can anybody help me, with a bit of translation on the Dutch Railway Museum site. I can figure out that they have a brand new museum opening next year, but what about the old museum? Particularly, will it be open on the morning of the 9th July, when I would like to visit on the way to the meet?
Posted by: BartDG

Re: Mark's Excellent Adventure: photos! - 04/02/2004 07:20

I've checked the site and it says that it is closed for restaurations and enhancements. The new openingdate is "2005" (not specified further).
Maybe you can visit it when you come to the 6th Amersfoort meet!

Re: Mark's Excellent Adventure: photos! - 04/02/2004 07:42

Thanks for that, it'll be something to look forward to, now I've got to think of another activity to keep the family going, not that the wife and daughter were being other than dragged along to the museum! I don't imagine that their is much other reason for visiting Utrecht, we're spending three nights in Amsterdam and one in Delft, can anyone suggest antwhere else worth a visit for the thurday night, before moving on to Amersfoort?

Re: Mark's Excellent Adventure: photos! - 04/02/2004 09:28

Oh, Thomas.. if you want a slightly easier time of it, try grabbing the files that I use to hold the text tags. There is one of these in each subdirectory. Eg.

http://rtr.ca/europe_summer03/06_Germany/misc/INFO

These INFO files list all of the photos, in presentation sequence, with text after the filenames.

Well, thursday night will probably be the "amsterdam night" for a bunch of people, but... Hmm... What are your interests? There's of course all of Southern Netherlands - Arnhem (with the "bridge too far" stuff), and Maastricht (slightly more developed from a culinary point of view compared to the north...)

Re: Mark's Excellent Adventure: photos! - 04/02/2004 10:49

We're in Amsterdam, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday with wife and daughter, then we plan going to Delft, I'll have a look at the map and the rail links at the weekend.
I'd come thursday night, but for the three of us, friday and saturday and most of Sunday will probably be best, talking to everybody.

Re: Mark's Excellent Adventure: photos! - 04/02/2004 10:53

OK, if you are down in Delft, I suggest Madurodam (the miniature Netherlands) in Den Haag, and Den Haag in gereral. Maybe even Rotterdam (for shopping), and the impressive flood barrier works south of Rotterdam.

I'll be coming in either the Morgan or the 101, depending on status of installs closer to the actual date. The Pink Panther install would be the same as on the Carawagon last year, so that would be boring!

Not that long to go now, folks. Have you made your decision about whether you are going to come over, yet?

Patrick is going to be bringing some pretty impressive new toys that everyone should enjoy playing with. I've got plans to make both Saturday and Sunday full event days instead of event plus recovery (big Chinese meal on the Sunday as well). Beer has already been booked, and a few interesting things are going on in the background that I shouldn't really mention until they firm up a bit.

Should be fun! There's already a significant number of people mailing me saying they are bringing friends, so this year looks to be bigger and better than ever!

Are YOU gonna be there?

Re: 5th Empeg Owner's Meet, July 9/10/11 2004 - 04/04/2004 19:14

Looks like there is a boat monday morning at 7:30AM. Is there a 1 hour time difference between UK and Netherlands? That means I would get in around 10AM if there is. That is doable and should get me into cambridge around 11:30.

I will have a car because I am not paying for it and even if I was, I would probably get one. I am strange that way. I paid £75 for the extra insurance to drive the car into continental Europe. The Stena website is asking for a Reg. number for the car. Can I assume the rental will have that? Will it matter if it's a rental as long as I have the proper insurance?
