I have quite a few tracks that are from compilations that I would like to add the year info into the tag. Is there any software out there that will look at the rest of info in the tag and go out and search for missing criteria?

Software that does this reliably, and gets its information from a decent and accurate (and complete) database, is a bit of a holy grail, I think. I, too, would love to see such software.

In the meantime, you can use the site www.allmusic.com to look up the information by hand.

I was afraid someone was going to point me to allmusic.com....If that is what it takes then I am just going to leave them be....I wish I had that much fre time to spend on that. I could have sworn a while back on Hydrogenaudio.org I saw that Foobar could do this. I just never had the time to explore it anymore than that. There is a little bit of a learning curve to use it(a.k.a. lazyiness on my part). Maybe I will look into that again and see if it is possible.

I like Tag&Rename. It can pull info from Allmusic.com as well as CDDB. It's not automatic, but about as close as you can get. http://www.softpointer.com/tr.htm

I second Tag&Rename. I obsessively tagged my 6000+ songs and got almost all the info from allmusic.com. I'm still not sure just why I took the time to put the years in to every album, but I did.

And it only took me a year and a half!

What I am really looking for is software that can take o few of the fields in the tag and go out and search out missing fields or selected fields from CDDB or allmusic.com's database. It sure would make things real sweet. I am no programmer, but the concept itself does not seem out of the realm of reality. An interface that would allow you to do this would be very powerful.

As BinaryC and FireFox31 said, Tag&Rename does this. It can look up data from allmusic or freedb. You select tracks and it will look up the information using the folder name (I believe). It requires a couple of clicks on your part but it's very easy and convenient. I tag most of my CDs this way.

From the help file,

Connect your PC to the Internet
Select files from one album
Click the "Get album titles from allmusic.com"
Search for this album in the opened www.allmusic.com site window
Press "Get info" button when you have found the album information
Sort files and titles using the "Move file up" and "Move file down" functions or drag and drop
Select what information you want to save
Press "Write tags"

There is another freeware tag updater out the called MP3tag. Works pretty good....
