How do you keep the "visual" setting?

Everytime I start my car, the empeg player goes straight to the list setting where it shows the current song, and the next 3 songs. Is there a way to make it start in the visual setting everytime I start the car?

Thanks for the site but there are too many technical things I don't know. For example, I would never understand how to install a kernel to get it to start in the visual setting.

I mean, yes, it's a bit technical, but part of the fun of the empeg-car is fiddling with the technical stuff.

But if you don't want to deal with the technical stuff, then just press and hold the bottom button like it says at the link above.

You would just load hijack - that is the kernel the FAQ mentions. Click on the hijack link in the header above (Quick Links section) and follow the instructions for windows install.

Hey tfabris, exactly how hard is it to load a kernel that takes you straight to the visual setting? I'm considering it but I don't want to spends hours doing it.

Well, all this is in the FAQ already, but what you need is:

- The serial cable, and it has to be the right one and it has to be working.

- The logoedit software (linked from the Hijack page)

- The hijack kernel (also linked from the Hijack page).

Assuming that you don't need to install the visual-basic runtime modules to get logoedit working, then you just run it, pick "kernel flash utility" from its menu, and point it to the kernel file.

If all goes well, it might only take two minutes after you're done downloading things. Of course, there's a bunch of places things could go wrong in that process, so that's what the FAQ is for and why it's so much more wordy than what I just wrote.

In other words, you've already spent more time in a quandry about it, than it would to just do it.

It's real easy, we can walk you through it too. Maybe join us in the chat room if you have issues. This would also be a good time to make sure you have your player upto version 2.00 final "developer" (not a beta) since you will have your serial cable out.

Besides the visual mode, the HiJack kernal allows you to do many other cool things. There are too many to list, but it will give you Bass and Treble controls, an automatic volume adjustment (to make all songs the same volume) and a cool "Breakout" game. All of this in one kernal. Once you get more comfortable, you will discover tons of other features of HiJack.

On thing to keep in mind, you can't break your empeg sending a kernal to it. It's very safe.

Yes and believe me you can do it. I no zip about computers and I was able to instal it. I was scared the hole time though.

Go ahead and try it meth....after the first time, you'll say, "I should have done that long ago."

Well, I work with extreme non-techies every day and this is something many could do, but many could not.

But, in my opinion if you can't do this you'll have trouble using an empeg.

I am sure you could get someone to remotely connect to your PC and help you. I do that all the time with those non-techies and they think I am a god when I fix their PC from 1000 miles away..

I just got my HU back from some servicing and hooked it up to my PC (a/c adapter in use) and noticed that it boots up directly to the visual. Now i reread the FAQ, but it makes no mention of DC or AC power. does the unit default to a non-visual screen only when in the car, or is my MKII just special?

Only in the car. If it sees DC power, it will avoid the visual display (unless you override that with hijack). AC though will act normally.

Tks Paul...btw sent the HU to Eutronics to have my Hard Drive not Found issue taken care of..just got it back yesterday...resoldered the joints...very reasonable and worth every cent

Excellent! I am glad that it worked out. Stu does good work, and it is a fairly common problem. Did you replace the hard drive cable with the longer version while you were at it? This might help lower the stress on the IDE header for future use. Enjoy!

Actually i did that a while ago.....all was fine until the heat of the summer stressed somthing in the unit. Hopefully all is well now.
