spare empeg as a networked player? - 18/10/2004 12:30

Hi,

I have one empeg in the car (duh...) and a spare I bouht during the firesale which spent some time in the GF's car but I got it back (sans GF ).

I have massed a large mp3 collection from my CD's on one PC, not all of which are on my emepg.

Is there any software that will let me browse through these mp3s (structured directories as genre, then artist, then album) and play them on the empeg without have to upload them to it first?

Something like installing samab on the empeg and then just browsing, or did everyone get sensible and buy Ricievers instead?

Thanks

Dave

There's software that exists that lets the empeg work in the same way as a Rio Receiver that was given to folks at the Amersfoort meet with the v3a8 software. Of course, we're not allowed to give it to you....

You might want to look into buying a Rio Receiver instead. I think "ineedcolor" is selling a pair of them right now in the For Sale forum. If you have Tivo, their Home Media Option allows you to do this. Finally, there was an alpha release of the empeg software that basically turns your empeg into a Rio Receiver, but it won't work as a normal player if you install this alpha version.

searchy, search....

Ah, so it is released but its a "in with the in crowd" distribution model
Tho here: http://empegbbs.com/ubbthreads/showflat....true#Post231539
I get the impression that you thought it was ok to distribute it too, or has that changed?
(I guess it never went live)
Is this any use to me or was it removed from this version:

Yeah, Im tempted to buy a Receiver, but would prefer to do so from the UK for the usual reasons.

Shame, looks like the spare is going back into its box then or should I hold my breath:

Well, I don't understand the restriction, but it's there nonetheless.

There were three reasons for holding back the Amersfoort release:

1. To make it something special for the meet - at least for a while
2. It was a bit of an unknown quantity (with 1 or 2 known bugs, subsequently fixed)
3. It was not tagged (tsk)

I tried to rectify this (for the regular car build) on my last day, but sadly fell victim to a serious attack of reason #2. At this stage I wouldn't have cared at all about the Amersfoort release getting distributed more widely but although I'm still employed by Rio, it is on a garden leave basis and I doubt I have any authority to distribute a release or give anyone permission to do so. Maybe someone less non gratia can do so.

I detect some hostility towards your former employer in recent posts....

Quite unintentional. Also, strictly speaking, they're still my current employer for two more weeks.

When you leave a technology company, regardless of how many years of your life you have dedicated to it, it is quite common to be instructed to not work your notice period. Your presence may be seen as distracting for other staff, or there may be concerns about your having access to IP or plans that would benefit a competitor (even though there are perfectly good laws to protect against that sort of shenanigans). This attitude is especially prevelent in US companies, which often fail to understand the value of preserving corporate memory.

The state of being employed and paid to sit at home (and *not* work for someone else) is known as Garden Leave. To that end my garden is now freshly mowed and trimmed. In another two weeks I'll be allowed to start with my new employer and get on with some real work, which will be nice.

I see. I'm familiar with the practice, but hadn't heard that name for it.

I have always found it (gardening leave) a puzzling practice. After all, if you wanted to rip off corporate secrets or IP surely you would do that before you announced your intention to leave...

In what I'll admit was a pleasant surprise to me, the new regime is in fact quite happy with continued semi-official car-player support...

Ooo.. had me excited for a moment there!

Oh wait, I see.. the Amersfoort alpha8 is now available from there for the masses! As is v2.01, and the alpha8-rioREceiver-like load for the Empeg/RioCar player

Are you perhaps uploading alpha10 soon?

Shy bairns would have probably got it this evening -- I got Michael's permission last week, but it's just been a case of getting round to it.
