beta8b released

beta8b released - 30/11/1999 12:58

I've just finished uploading beta8b to the website but before you all get too excited I need to point out that it probably isn't worth upgrading. This upgrade contains changes which will not be retracted by reapplying a previous upgrade (it alters the partition table of the first disk). This means that you cannot return to any previous version after installing beta8b.

If you are suffering from ff000007 errors whilst checking the hard disks then this upgrade should solve that problem.

The only reason we have uploaded this release is to provide an escape route in case beta8c contains problems that require people to downgrade. We expect beta8c to be available very soon.

Just curious, what consitutes a 'letter' verses a 'number' upgrade?

I.e. Why 8a...b...c...? Rather than 8...9...10...etc.

Paul.

I just increment the letter. Sometimes Hugo says - "We've added lots of user-visible stuff so why don't you call it betaN instead" and I do...

I think it just depends on how important the user visible changes are. We've made major behind the scenes improvements for the next release so it will be 8c (at least I hope so - I've already built parts of it and I don't want to rebuild them).
