3.0?

3.0? - 21/09/2006 00:21

I haven't done anything but enjoy my empeg for the past 6 years, but a problem with it brought me back to the site tonight. That seems to be fixed, but while looking for software to reinstall on the player, I thought I noticed a 3.0 version.

Anyone have some info on this? What is new from the 2.0 that I've been using for the past couple of years?

Thanks,
Jeremy

3.0a11 is ALPHA software and does have some bugs. If you can stand it's little quirks it's great. I've been running it since it has been released.

Some of the features
Support for FLAC, OGG Vorbis
Crossfading
Gapless MP3 playback.

Those are the three that I remember most, I'm sure there are tons more. It is pretty stable, but you have to be prepared in case things do go bad. If you are unsure stick with 2.0 final.

The main issue I've had with 3.0 is I can't get emplode to work with it for love nor money. There's an updated emplode executable to download but it corrupts the database and screws things up very quickly. However if you don't add new content very often and don't mind reverting to 2.0 to do so then 3.0 does offer some great player features.

In particular its tuner is much better than 2.0, although overall stability isn't perfect.

Works fine for me with player 3a11 and emplode 2.0. Maybe it's a number of tracks/RAM thing?

I'm on v3.0a11 Mk2a with standard RAM (planning to eventually solder that last wire to complete the upgrade)and about 21,000 tracks and it mostly works fine. Occasionally I get a timeout when synching, so I just reboot and resynch and all is well.

Also I get the occasional sigkill, but again, it is worth it for crossfading and a couple of other goodies.

Emplode always hoses my database when using the alphas. I use a method that someone else posted earlier and it works every time. Use JEmplode, but exit completely after each player synch. I just finished uploading 15 gig of tunes in several batches to my Mk2 using this method and it worked brilliantly.

Did I hear at the meet that v3 wasn't going to change... Something to the effect that it wouldn't even build anymore?

I hope not but...

Apart from the development team having now split up, the current owners of the "empeg" codebase eradicted certain IP due to legal issues (i.e. stuff previously acquired from their competitors). I think it must be safe to say that there will not be another v3 release.

So i noticed v2.01. How old is that? I haven't been on the site for a while, and cant remember what was new/different in that release over v2.0 final.

v2.01 differs from 2.0-final in exactly two ways:

- The version number.
- Support for using the memory in expanded RAM module kits, if you've purchased and installed one.

If you haven't installed one of those kits, then stick with version 2.0 final.

You should use quotes around the word "support" as it doesn't support the 64mb add-on cards at all. I think it works with people that did the stack chip meathod for lesser RAM levels however.

Naw, just a note saying "it didn't do squat for Brad" should do it!
