'Misel CAR HDD MP3' @ CES ? - 16/01/2001 16:59

Here:

http://www.potce.com/Cat1/01/Electronics/ces/car.htm

I have read that:

/We were also excited about some new hard-drive based head units. An OEM manufacturer called Misel, showed us their prototype MP3 player. They bragged of it's ability to create MP3's "on the fly", meaning you could hit record, and turn radio songs into MP3s. Very cool. See the picture on the right side of this page/

Anyone knows more ? Tx J.

Oh man, that would be sweet to be able to do on the empeg... moreso from the AUX input than from the radio i'd think, so you could rip CD's on the spot, in car. I realize you'd be introducing some slight degredation but it doesn't seem like it'd be all that much. Was this ever mentioned in the Wish List? *searches* i couldn't find it if so, though i seem to remember it being mentioned. How hard would this be to do?

AFAIK, it is not possible. the processor doesn't have enough power to do encoding but for decoding, it's fine and has enough headroom to do the visuals.

search the wishlist posts for this. maybe even the FAQs

even if you could encode 'on the fly', would you want to other than for memos & stuff? the quality would be dubious and then you still have to name & file it & you cant get it out again to make a backup of it.

I don't remember where but I remember reading on this board that the Empeg only uses around 30% of CPU when playing and displaying visuals. That being the case, I think the empeg certainly has the goods to encode mp3's on the fly. It might take a little longer than a really fast PC but it should be more than required.

Even if you had to record to WAV and compress after recording as a seperate low or high threaded task, you could listen to music and compress mp3's for your recorded WAVs as a backround task. It would still be the coolest feature around. Hell, My Ipaq PDA (206Mhz) can record 44,100Hz-16Bit Stereo at 172KB/Sec..... So, the empeg should not break a sweat.

Please! .... This would be an awesome feature.
Another thought:
It would be really sweet if the IDE was exported outside the Empeg for an external CDROM drive (or matching intergrated unit) allowing the Empeg to do direct Digital ripping + play CD's, CDR's, and load software.
"I realize that last wish is a pipe dream due to the S3 RIO deal.... But it's fun to dream!

If the empeg would be able to rip from AUX this would support piracy. I don't think the guys@empeg would support that.
Rip your CD's at home.
But as I remember there was a discussion about recording e.g. traffic reports (even if not sitting in the car).

As I read in a description about some Sony car-hifi where you are able to record some voice memos. I don't know the model any more. It's been about 1/2 a year ago..

It's not processor power/speed or system resources, it's the fact that on the Mk1 there is physically no path for the processor to sample; on the Mk2 there is a sample path, but the sample rate is insufficiently high to accurately resolve anything above 15kHz.

I suggested a self-sampling EQ system for the Mk2 based on it's speech mike input and the ability to sample, but above 15k it would not work. That would mean that you would only be able to do output level compensation below this level. However, it would be pretty useless for decent ripping on the AUX port.

I disagree.
Saying "If the empeg would be able to rip from AUX this would support piracy. " is just not correct.
If one was to say.... "it does support piracy"....Then you would also have to say:
Laptops, portables and PDAs were supporting piracy too.
And thats just not sound.
Besides, the Empeg today onlys lets you upload to the player. Downloading out of the unit is not provided unless "you" the customer takes it upon yourself to afford this new feature.
So even if the empeg could record, compress or whatever, it's going to comply with the copywright laws.
Just my 2c.

Good arguments.

Would you be willing to fight the RIAA in court on that basis as an individual?
