ok now I connected my 2nd drive as the primary and it booted up fine but I had 1.03 on that drive so I installed the 2.0 beta on it everything worked fine then I connected both drives in the original order and everything works fine.

I wonder if my primary drive is dying I have two ibm travelstars the primary is the 10 gig that came with the player and the secondary is a 20 gig that I added

I am planning on driving from minnesota to chicago next week (about 7 hour drive) so it would really suck if the drive dies on the way.

oh yeah and one of the drives in my desktop died also so I would have to re-rip about half of my cd's if the drive in the empeg dies.

While you have the unit open, move the drives/cable around to see if it spins up/down. A bad cable and not simply a bad connection can make your drives come on/offline at seemingly random times.

I bought my MK2a recently and the drive cable was bad. After first playing with it and adjusting, the unit worked for a while. But moving the tray assembly around could cause it to stop. A new cable sent from empeg fixed it all up.

thanks I tried doing that it didn't cause any problems

I put it back together now we'll see if it dies again.

Another possibility is a loose master/slave jumper, or a loose IDE cable connection at the motherboard.
