Received my Rio Car, but no remote.

Received my Rio Car, but no remote. - 11/01/2002 22:36

On the 6th, I ordered a 10gig (long after they reported out of stock), and on the 7th I ordered a tuner (again, long after the e-store indicated out of stock). Checking the order a couple of days ago actually gave me tracking numbers for both, which kind of surprised me. After reading more posts here though, I was convinced that the two packages were a Rio Volt and a Rio 64 meg card.

Today, the packages actually came. The small box was an actual tuner. The large box was not the 10gig that I ordered, but one of the older 12 gig models in the old white empeg box (with a Rio sticker affixed).

My joy at receiving them was somewhat muted though when I noticed there was no remote in the package. For any of you that have had similar problems, what would you recommend is the best way to rectify it? Do I contact the estore customer service, or somewhere else at Rio? Phone (next to impossible to get through), or email?

Also, since my unit is already fairly old (serial number 010101266), are there any known problems that my unit might have? My serial cable is correct, the tuner extension cable is wired up right, I've got an AR screen, and the knob stays sturdy so far. Anything else that I might want to check for?

I too received an older 12GB Rio. Mine had everything in the box. What are the differences between this 12GB and the 20GB i got last week? Should I be concerned that this is an older unit?

thanks

12GB unit should be better; I think the 20gb unit has 2 drives; 12gb is one drive and is more easily upgradable.
BUT the 12gb unit might (?) have 8mb ram in place of the 12 that the newer units have.

Contact Rio Car support ([email protected]) and David will fix the problem for you.

The 12Gb units are identical to every other Rio Car except for the packaging, and an extra 2Gb of storage. If you got an old empeg user guide and would like the Rio version, contact support.

Actually both units are from January 2001. How would i be able to tell if it has 8 or 12MB of memory? Is it upgradeable if it is only 8 and is it worth it? I am planning on upgrading the drives on the 12GB unit as soon as I am more familiar with these bad boys.

Thanks for the responses.

You guys are very informative and I am happy to be a proud owner of the awesome players.

No, the ram isnt upgradable. If the player says "rio" on the top cover, then it has the extra ram in it.

Both my players say Rio on them. So I guess I'm good. Thanks for the information.

Actually, the difference would be between 12 and 16, not 8 and 12. The original empeg branded Mk. 2 units had 12 meg ram, and the Rio branded Mk. 2a units had 16 meg ram.

I was a little bit confused about whether or not my player would have the 16 meg of ram as well, since it said empeg all over the box and everything. However, it said Rio silk screened on the top of the unit itself, and indeed reports 16 meg when booting.

FYI -- I have two 20GB units in front of me and they both have one HDD each. They are both branded 'Rio' (but not for long.)

In fact, one of the 20GB units arrived with a 30GB drive in it.

I too got an older 12 gig when I ordered a 10 gig. No complaints here I guess. Just one question... Do I really need the Rio manual or does the older empeg one cover all of the same infomation?

The Rio manual was mainly a re-brand - there is little additional information in it. The Mk 2 manual is actually better IMHO
