Hey "Old Hands" recommendations - 16/01/2002 09:36

I was just wondering what tweaks/ addons are recommended or "must haves". Rio Car Dot Org pulls a lot of the Empeg community together, but it seems like a lot of the third party stuff is either hard to find, or maybe it's just not a copious as I originally thought? Anyhow, since I'm a RioCar n00b, what do you guys think are the must have hacks/ addons and where do I find them?

And you know, the RCDO faq is pretty cool. Most of the questions I had got answered there.

Hijack. It's so popular, it's linked at the top of the BBS

Mark Lord has done an excelent job with it. He has pretty much taken any hacks people wanted and threw them into one complete, and easy to use package. Then he has also added his own features as well. Definitly try it out, even if just for the easy to use Voladj interface (the hack that would "dynamicially compress" the music volume).

Another good one (and you may need it to upload the Hijack anyway) is Tony's LogoEditor.

EDIT: Oops, I'm only an addict, so take my recommendation with a grain of salt.

Okay. Does this replace the Version 2.00-beta7 upgrade? HiJack is just a kernel replacement, correct?

I'm on the latest RioCar software, and I installed the Version 2.00-beta7 upgrade last night, HiJack is built on this kernel, correct? So my install of 2.00b7 was unnessecary. Correct?

Yeah. I got the logo editor already. It seems to be quite the memory hog while it's running though. Either that or it just reserves too much memory or something. I was getting "Out of Memory" messages on my WinXP 1GHz 128meg RAM machine... weird. I mean, it worked and all... I just had to shut it down to start up anything else.

Hijack is just a kernel, correct. It does require 2.0 of the player software though. So the proper steps would be:

1. Install the 2.0 Beta 7 upgrade file
2. Install the Hijack kernel
3. Check back on the hijack page in a few days, upgrade hijack, enjoy 1-5 new features
4. Repeat step 3.

Any time you apply a .upgrade file, you will then need to reapply the Hijack kernel.

No.

The kernel and the player application are separate modules -- but they come as a matched pair.

Mark's Hijack kernel is based on kernel v2.0b7, so you'll need to have loaded the stock v2.0b7 first, otherwise the (older) player (which wasn't upgraded) won't work with the (newer) kernel.

This is in the FAQ in a set-off special-note box. It's an important concept to understand, so read that FAQ entry carefully.

If you have ethernet Displayserver 1.1 is quite a cool little utility

but apart from hijack and logo edit the only other thing that i love is my pioneer steering wheel remote.
