worth it to get extra remote?

worth it to get extra remote? - 16/01/2002 11:09

I just bought a 30 GB Empeg online. I've noticed that almost everything on there has sold out, from the extra mounting kits to the extra screens. Is it worth my while to buy an extra remote right now? Having not even received my player, I'm imagining it's pretty difficult running it without a remote. Or are there other remotes out there that would work with the Empeg as well? Any advice would be appreciated.

Most any remote that operates with the same frequencies can be made to work with the empeg through Mark Lords excellent HiJack replacement kernel, which enables you to do IR remote code remapping. To check if a remote will work, there's also a page which displays the codes the empeg receives - just go there aim the remote at the empeg and see if codes show up. If they do, you just add entries in a file to map [new remotes code] -> [Rio remote code].

Other goodies HiJack gives you is, among many more, ftp and http access to the player (if connected with Ethernet)

You can use other compatible remotes if you run the hijack kernel.

I've got a spare remote however because it's just easier with the correct button markings.

Out of the box - Kenwood car remotes work too (the empeg Mk II came with a "Credit Card" type Kenwood remote.) I don't think you'll need two remotes however..

If you really like the remote that comes with the Empeg, you can pick up the Kenwood one (that shipped with the older units). I'm pretty sure they still make it because I saw it at my local car stereo shop.

Yes, but you get a remote with the player, so I don't understand why you're worried. Read the FAQ on what comes with the player when you buy it.

Or are there other remotes out there that would work with the Empeg as well?

By default, the Kenwood KCA-R6A remotes (very common, available many places) also work. here is a guide on what the buttons do.

Spend some time reading through the FAQ while you wait for the player.

Well, actually I know it comes with a remote. But since it looks small and possibly fragile, I was worried that it might get lost or broken. So I just wanted to know if I should plan ahead so I don't get stuck with a player I couldn't use.

Thanks for the info.

I leave a remote everywhere I regularly use my empeg. So that's one at work, one at home and one in the truck. That way I never worry about not having it. I tried to keep one in the carry case, but I always managed to forget to put it back in, so I bought extras.

This remote available from Crutchfield works very well right out of the box, and does not require any reprogramming or kernal hacks. It does not have 100% of the functions of the RioCar remote, but the only one missing that I find important is the key to scroll through the info modes.

Crutchfield has the Kenwood remote incase anyone needs one. They list it as 'in stock'.

Maybe I should order one and see if they accidentally send me a surround sound system instead!

This could conceivably happen if you ordered a Rio remote from the eStore, since we sell a home- theatre-in-a-box product on the GoVideo brand!

I bought two spares just in case. I manage to lose everything small.

Me too you can never have enough remotes lying around..

Yes, but you can also have NOT enough money in your wallet. My advice is just take care of the one you've got, but if you're rich and have more money than you know what to do with, buy til your heart's content.

Or you could just buy them all to where they're out of stock, and then sell them on Ebay for twice the price. Just kidding.

Damn, we really need to be collecting the funniest posts on the BBS in a central location. That was just too funny.
