Hijack Animation Contest!

Hijack Animation Contest! - 17/03/2002 08:19

Mark called for this in the programming forum, but I thought it deserved top billing for everyone to see ...

Mark "Hijack" Lord is on an international search for the best Hijack startup animation, and it _could be yours_! Let's get to it -- He's threatened to make one himself, and I, for one, say we cannot let that happen

Winner #1 (by mschrag)

Jeez, I went away for the weekend and you didn't give me a chance to enter the contest.

I've got a great idea for one, but it'll take me an evening to get it cobbled together....

ok here's a dumb question how are you getting the images from the gameboy camera to the pc ? or are you just copying the gameboy screen ?

or did you just feel like saying Gameboy cam's rock and this image has nothing to do with the gameboy camera :-)

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 17/03/2002 21:12

I use a little contraption called a GBXchanger that you plug the cart into, plug the other end into the printer port... and fire up some software that grabs the ROM image, and export the frames as BMP's.

So yes, i did use a GBCam to get the spinnin' empeg. Next up... my car. =]

Thanks all. I wanna redo it... that was a test run. Heheh... maybe i should do it like the first new beetle commercials where it's just spinning around everywhere. Anyone have any other ideas of stuff that could be gbcammed? It works out well since the gbcam's palette is only 4 colors, it does some cool dithering.

Is porn allowed.. - 18/03/2002 00:54

I was thinking about taking one of those cheesy pop-up porn ads that your browser gets hammered with if you hit the wrong sites and porting it to an empeg animation...

Posted by: tfabris

Re: Is porn allowed.. - 18/03/2002 06:15

You're welcome to do that yourself on your own, but you won't be able to place that on the Riocar.org site. It will get rejected by Drakino.

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 18/03/2002 16:45

Hey, that reminds me A LOT of one of the animations in my Pioneer DEH-9000 organic-EL head unit.

In fact it's exactly the same except for the last part with the "empeg - Hijack loaded" screen.

Doesn't chance the fact that it's a cool animation though! Nice work!

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 18/03/2002 16:49

hehe good eye.. its accully a lil differnt i redid the whole animation i just had a still of the animation and worked with it from there
Posted by: SE_Sport_Driver

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 18/03/2002 16:50

Oh cool! Loren, you should loop that! By the time I scroll down the page, it has stopped.

A VW logo spinning around and going from left to right would be cool! (I don't even own a VW!)

So, is this going to make all the boot logos obsolete?

Is there anyway to change the smaller empeg logo during the load screen?
Posted by: justinlarsen

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 18/03/2002 16:55

no boot logos are still cool if u want too.. or if u want your new animations to be seemless with a boot logo.. brad u should start in the animations, i loved your boot logos.. i would like to see what u could do with these its fun..

Yeah, i'd like to put some real effort into it too. I was just playin' around... hahah. I KNEW that plane looked familiar! My brother has one of those Pioneer units in his car. =]

I've gotta think of some more good gbcam possibilites.....ooo... i could take some time lapse of driving on the interstate, then composite in a big huge empeg logo and have the 1st person view wreck into the empeg...

Heh, RealLife(tm) got in the way today, but I have some of it done and will probably work on it more tonight.

It's not as spectacular as the video-captured 3D stuff, it's just a variation on the original tux animation. But if I can pull it off, it should be a lot of fun.

Not sure if I can pull it off, though I will certainly try...

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 18/03/2002 22:40

Ok, I got animated logo support on the logo site now, simply use the animated upload option on the members screen. Ignore the big red text for now. It uses a java applet from mschrag to view them, click on it once to begin the animation, and once again to stop it.

Tomorrow I'll finish up the code so I can approve them, and figure out a way to display them on the Riocar.org site.

Oh, and consider this feature beta. If something breaks, let me know, and I'll look into the code tomorrow.

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 19/03/2002 15:34

Heh, good, you got the joke right away. I was afraid no one would get it.

I actually popped in the DVD to research it, but there weren't enough pixels to do the candlestick or to get the subtleties of the moves, so it's kind of a generic version of the slide-on.

I could have done more stuff, but my goal was to make it match the original animation exactly in terms of frame count (27). The custom logo doesn't show up for as long if the frame count is too long.

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 19/03/2002 15:58

Not to disparage all of the fine work that has been done on Logos, but with the animation editor they are beginning to look oh so 20th century these days.

And a Logo can still be appended to the animation for as long as one wants, by just making it the final frame, and optionally repeating it (4 bytes per, 14 frames/second) for as long as one wants it to hang around.

Cheers
Posted by: tfabris

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 19/03/2002 16:07

Well, I have this specific thing I do with the custom logo, which is why the custom logo screen time is important to me.

What I do, is I take the image from the boot animation, the last frame with Tux in his final position. Then I erase the Empeg logo and put my name and work phone number in place of the empeg logo. That's my custom logo: The contact info in case the player is lost or recovered from a theft. And Tux standing there, still, next to my contact info.

You're right, I could incorporate that into the animation if I wanted. But I like the idea of having the logo and the animation be two separate things, with the animation being the "official" part of it, and the logo being the "personal" part of it.

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 19/03/2002 16:19

I abdicate my "throne" That's awesome ... You should make the word "hijack" appear as he slides by.
Posted by: tfabris

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 19/03/2002 16:22

Aw, thanks, guys. I'm glad you like it.

Is the word "Hijack" absolutely necessary? I'd think that the presence of the nonstandard animation would be enough to clue you in on the presence of Hijack.

Also, during all of this discussion, and all of this new animation software, no mention has been made of what happens in the case of a player that's been set to the "Rio" personality?
Posted by: mschrag

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 19/03/2002 17:24

OK OK ... Hijack = not necessary ... My personal opinion = Rio is dead to me . It will always be the Empeg to me.

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 19/03/2002 18:04

My vote is for this one. Closer to the original and keeping the empeg spirit. I think this should be the default one. Shame you can't put some white briefs on him like Tom Cruise wore but they wouldn't show up in the front too well, just in the butt shot Oh, he should have socks on too!
Posted by: drakino

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 19/03/2002 18:14

Well I was busier then normal today, so I haven't ogtten everything done yet. Feel free to still upload logos, I'll hopefully have time tomorrow to get the necessary changes into the code.

I figure I am going to stick the animated logos in alongside the normal ones, and have a filter option at the bottom to just see one or the other, similar to the category filters now.

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 19/03/2002 18:20

Don't have a Pontiac, but I think that'd be awesome for any car logo! Ford, GM, Subaru etc... way to go!

Gotta ask, was the thing called HiJack before or after Sept. 11?
Posted by: tfabris

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 19/03/2002 18:34

Aw, thanks, glad you liked it.

I thought about giving him the shirt and briefs, but couldn't draw that well enough in the limited number of pixels to make it look right.

What I should have done was to precede it with a shot of a black flipper pushing up all the sliders on an EQ...

And he is wearing socks, they're just the same shade as his feet. How could you expect him to do the slide in bare feet?
Posted by: Laura

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 19/03/2002 18:55

I guess I just didn't look close enough. How could I have missed them? Flippers wouldn't move across the floor very well with out them. Been a while since I saw that movie, I forgot he had on a t-shirt also. Time to rent it again or just break down and buy it.

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 19/03/2002 18:59

I forgot he had on a t-shirt also.

Yeah, well, I'm guessing most women (and some men) spent most of that scene looking at the lower half of his body, so that's understandable.

And it was an oxford shirt, by the way.

We installed hijack and uploaded loren's boot animation using jemplode with no problems.
Posted by: tfabris

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 19/03/2002 19:32

We installed hijack and uploaded loren's boot animation using jemplode with no problems.

That's not exactly what I meant. What I meant was...

1) The original kernel from the Cambridge guys has two animations, a Rio one and an Empeg one.

2) The latest Hijack, if you don't feed it a custom animation, will use a default animation in the kernel.

3) The default animation in Hijack is no longer the one from the Cambridge guys. (Well, actually it was from me, but they were the ones who compiled it into their kernel.)

4) Mark has replaced the kernel's original animation with Mike Schrag's custom animation in his current Hijack build.

5) So. Did Mark replace the Rio animation as well as the Empeg animation in his current kernel? Or do you only see his replacement default animation if the player uses the Empeg personality? What happens when you use the default animation and you have hijack installed and you have the player set to the Rio personality?

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 19/03/2002 19:49

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 20/03/2002 11:17

The only consequence I've seen for a longer-than-stock animation is that the custom logo doesn't hang around on the screen as long after the animation is done playing.
Posted by: tfabris

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 20/03/2002 11:18

My animation (as I stated earlier in this thread) was 27 frames, which I think is the same number of frames as the original waving tux.

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 20/03/2002 11:26

27 Unique frames? I am more concerned with the Unique frames than how many times you flash the same frame. if that is what you meant...then great!

Thanks,

Posted by: tfabris

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 20/03/2002 12:20

No, sorry, didn't know that's what you meant.

It's not 27 unique frames. Many frames were re-used. I think that my new RiskyTux is 17 unique frames, 27 total frames, and the original waving tux was 13 unique frames, 27 total frames.

You can find all this information out yourself simply by opening the file in Jemplode...

As far as I know, the 32 frame limit is a totally arbitrary selection ... I imagine that if we decided to allow more, it would work. Technically, there shouldn't be any problem with using all the frames.

As for the poll being taken I hope people don't really vote, makes me feel a little strange having it there. I may be single but that is not why I come to this board. I am a geek like everyone else here and just enjoy my empeg. Like any other member you can send me a PM or an email. You won't scare me off but don't try to

so nobody is allowed to judge my underpants

Too late.

Actually, you've drawn them fine, it's just that Tux's body shape and the low rez makes it hard to get them to look right. If I'd drawn them they would have looked the same.

Waving Back - 21/03/2002 05:08

Funny you should mention waving back at the Tux. This has been something I have struggled with every time I turn the Empeg on. Almost everyone I have shown the Emeg to waves back, but so far I have resisted. . .

I was wondering if their is a name for a condition where you "wave at inatimant objects"?

Re: Animation - 21/03/2002 11:28

Christian, that totally rocks!

If it looks like crap on the player, that's probably because of the white background. There's gotta be a way to edit it so that it looks good on a black background.

Blending the edges an the image so that it anti-aliases out to black instead of to white is something that all web artists have to deal with at some time or another in their lifetimes, so perhaps it's time you took a crack at it.

And regarding the work thing: How come you just don't rewind the clock a few hours on your way to work and show up ten minutes early?

It's partially there, people can upload the animated logos, but my approval system is not in place. Re: Animation - 21/03/2002 12:10

Christian, I just noticed one other thing about that animation that might be a factor in making it look good on the player.

Your animation uses the "Windows Palette" shades of gray for the darkgray and lightgray shades. These don't translate well to the car player screen, because its two shades of gray are not like the ones in the Windows palette.

If you were building the animation from something that was originally a color or full-grayscale image, I recommend that you use a custom palette when color-reducing it.

To create this custom palette, draw a fresh frame in the animation editor using all four colors, then export that frame as a PNG file. Open that PNG file in your image-editor software and use those colors as the basis for your custom palette.

Yeah, I'll keep tweaking the delorean animation until it looks right. I didn't realize that the windows pallate was different than the one that the empeg uses. I guess at 3AM everything looks the same.

Yup. The current plan is it will be at a place called the "Boat House" on lake Merced in San Francisco, on Saturday, May 25th. Exact time hasn't been decided. Keep an eye on the General forum and the Announcements forum for the official details when they've been hammered out.

Current thread on the topic is here.

Make sure the hoverconversion kit is in working order by then, you gotta make your proper entrance.

Re: Animation - 21/03/2002 16:25

.....or if you could give the penguin a baseball bat and have him busting out Windows.

That's it! Have Windows come up with the little window icon, so you think it's Microsoft. Then the penguin walks out with a bat and smashes the window. Then he could piss on the word "Windows" or something. Or you could have "empeg" just drop down from the top knocking the word "Windows" off the screen.

I was thinking about how Hijack at one time let you use multiple dance files to get different dances for flacefloor and I had an idea. Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 24/03/2002 14:55

Tony, I was thinking about this and I have a question for you:

Was the boot-logo (non-animated) display time determined by "(Custom Non-Animated Boot Logo display time) = (Total Boot Time) - (Animated Boot Logo Time)"?

I remember a while back some people wishing to see their custom non-animated boot logos display longer. Could a simple work around be to have a real short animated logo? Then someone could make a generic "Powered by....." or "Brought to you by..." animated logo followed by "Ford Motor Company" "Honda" etc or "Insert favorite logo here"...?

Or am I misunderstanding this?

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 25/03/2002 07:40

The boot animation plays, for as long as it wants to play.

Next, the custom logo, if any, is put on the display, where it remains until overwritten by player software starting up.

If the animation takes too long -- meaning that the player software is starting up by the time the animation finishes -- then the custom logo will just appear to blink on and then off again.

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 25/03/2002 10:53

Mark,

cool, that is what I though. So... if the boot-up animation was really short, the static boot logo would stay up longer correct? There were a few wishes a while back to have the static logo stay up longer. I assume fewer people will want this now that they can make their own animations.. but I thought we could have an animated "powered by" followed by a static car company logo or something (or linux etc.)
Posted by: mlord

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 25/03/2002 11:19

Again, the simplest way to do what you want, is to just tuck the custom logo into the tail end of the animation, and then have it repeat for a few frames.

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 25/03/2002 20:02

You could be the first to implement random animations:

Just write a userland program to randomly choose among animation files in a subdirectory (of your choosing) on the player's hard drive, and then write that animation to flash using aniwrite (source/binary available on the Hijack site).

Then just have the initscripts run your random chooser at boot time, to set up the random animation for NEXT TIME.

Cheers

Why not? I did. Paint Shop Pro was all I used. That was for all three animations I've done: The original empeg and Rio animations, and the original Risky Tux (without the underwear).

It's not that hard. It's only a couple dozen frames. Learning how to use the selection and move/cut/paste features of your image editor is the trick.

A close inspection of that file reveals that its grayscales are not the same as the limited colors available on the empeg screen. This will make some of the gray shades in the anti-aliased sections look different when you get it into the player.

Just so you know ahead of time.

Tom, does the Riocar site know how to refuse the animated gifs based on color depth, too?

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 30/03/2002 19:37

yah i actually noticed it looks better on the player.. how can i figure out which of the greyscales the empeg supports? So it is an exact match and so i don't get rejected when i do one that i actually want up on the riocar site.. also i have no problem posting the psd of them for assistance sake either.

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 30/03/2002 19:41

how can i figure out which of the greyscales the empeg supports?

Draw a picture in logoeditor using each of the four colors. Copy that image to the clipboard and paste it into your image-editing software as a new image.

Your image-editing software should have the ability to create a palette based on the colors in this new image. If you can't create a palette of four colors, create one with 16 colors where 13 of the colors are just black.

Then use this palette for all of your color reduction work.

Re: Hijack Animation Contest! - 30/03/2002 21:28

Tom, does the Riocar site know how to refuse the animated gifs based on color depth, too?

No, because it dosen't use them. My early hack for animated logos did, alongside the raw for download. But now, the site only accepts .raw files, and assumes that they came from Jemplode. Since that takes care of the color issue, I don't have to worry about it on the site.

I don't know how to do it in photoshop. I think that program does an awful job of handling palletized images. I use Paint Shop Pro which allows you to create your own palette from scratch. Values for the palette are in the FAQ.

you can make your own pallete in photoshop as well, from scratch.. what i am trying to figure out is how to get photoshop to allow me to let it interpret the pallette and adjust the images.

Hey, what do you want for a first animation....And the image is a little small...I guess I maybe, if really tired, could see the leaves and bong... HAHA

Tony, I think that your Logo Editor does a great job at converting images to the correct pallet. It may not turn out the way I always want, but at least I KNOW anything I paste into there and then copy out will be correct. I pass any logo.raw's through your program before I save as a .raw. (anyone else notice that if you save a .raw with less the 4 colors, it disregards what colors you have chosen and assigns its own? I think I know what it does this, but it is odd. ie, any 2 color logo will ALWAYS be black and white even if you pasted in grey1 and black. So any logo.raw you save MUST have at least 1 pixel of white. Can be a pain.)

if u make the platelet in photoshop in converts it perfectly to the pixel the same as paint shop pro and the logo editor, i use image ready for my animations and dose a great job of converting all the frams to the 4 color display.
