No warranty stickers on my unit?! - 11/05/2002 09:10

Hi. Took delivery of my Mk2a today. It works, but theres no stickers on the unit, no serial number, nothing. How will this affect a warranty claim?

I managed to get the serial number from the menu, so I'm ok with that.

The warranty stickers are probably on the inside, and the serial number is probably on the bottom.

I noticed that mine doesn't have warranty stickers either, so I guess they're on the inside as well.

But, um, small question: how do they put them on the inside in such a way that you can't open the unit without breaking them? Seems like a sort of catch-22, unless they include a tiny gnome that does the sticker application and then lives inside the Empeg. And if that's the case, why couldn't they just ask the gnome if it's ever been opened? I guess it must be a tiny invisible gnome, though, since noone ever reported seeing a gnome upon opening their Empeg.

Hmm...curiouser and curiouser...

Inner-mounted warranty stickers are on the drive tray mounting rails. Pulling out the drive tray is both the easiest way to mess with the innards as well as the most common cause of damage to the player (when done wrong).

After opening both my old Mark 2 and my friends 2A to help with the drive cable issue, I noticed a few ways support can probably tell if an empeg is opened. I'm not going to reveal them here since units are still under warranty, but I can confirm the stickers on the drive tray on the 2A units.

I have a dozen ways to tell if a player has been opened - all little things that you notice when opening so many new and used players. Although some people seem to go to trouble to make it obvious they've been poking around inside the unit; I've had one player with biscuit crumbs in it - and they didn't get in through the vent holes.

I think that my button LEDs would be a bit of a give-away.

That's nothing. I was taking apart an old HP LaserJet to see if I could replace one of the rollers when I found a Jaffa cake stuck inside by the toner cartridge. Turns out one of their kids must have noticed it on the floor one day because it was broken and decided to have a look inside

Luckily the Jaffa cake didn't damage anything. I still haven't gotten around to replacing the messed up roller though... Anybody know where I can get cheap HP LaserJet 6 series spares?

When the time came to replace the motherboard in my Dan Technologies PC, I found underneath it a pale blue, crystallised, and very very dead jelly baby.
