XP and RAS error 711 - 27/10/2002 15:02

The RAS subsystem on a mate's XP system fails to start up. The IP layer that uses the RAS manager to dialup fails: however, the device is OK and the diagnostic for the device passes fine.

So it seems that the RAS meat-in-the-sandwich is narfled. Any ideas how to fix/re-install/get around/repair etc. this so he can connect again?

The device is a USB ADSL modem, by the way. And as usual he "didn't do anything - it just stopped working all of a sudden". Yeah, right I've not heard that one before.

Odd side note: I have been out of work for 6 weeks and in that time have spent more time fixing computers than at any other time I can recall. Sheesh.

All right then, if that's too difficult, how would you do it on NT or 2000?

Install VNC server?

You can try "sfc /scannow" from a command prompt to reverify the Windows system files. Beyond that, you can try using the system restore feature to skip back before the problem appeared.

If neither of those work, booting off the XP disk and running through a repair may fix it. It also may break some other things as well if the system is running service pack 1, and you aren't using a slipstreamed CD.

Ugh, that reminds me I have to make a slipstreamed W2k sp3 image so I can use the same command to fix a 'Add/remove programs' mshta.exe crash problem without effing things up more.

I love the statement in the KB article "If you run these commands and the behavior is not resolved, perform an in-place upgrade of Windows 2000 Professional. " Bleah.
