Bloody stupid idea to name a screensaver "worm" - 11/11/2002 13:48

I've just got over a mild heart attack. I ran ps -eaf over an ssh connection to my server, and saw a process "worm -root". Not something that you want to see. Fortunately it was just an XScreensaver, so was completely benign. But whoever named it 'worm' needs to be taken behind the bike shed and given a good kicking IMO.

[root@genixia xscreensaver]# pwd
/usr/X11R6/lib/xscreensaver
[root@genixia xscreensaver]# mv worm wormscreensaver

Hahah. We've got an animation processor on my project named "Papaya Worm" that does batch conversions of animations to the game engine format... it's creepy to see that thing chugging on a remote machine taking up all the CPU.

worm -root

Someone I knew at university got in trouble for having a 3Mb binary (in the days when 3Mb binaries were big) in his home directory called "nethack".

Nowadays all I can wonder is where in hell the university got a unix sysadmin who didn't know what nethack was.

LOL.

Unix sysadmin......right. More likely some MSc/PhD candidate who decided that their bog-roll degree wasn't going to make them any money and that it was time to get into IT.
