What's your dream car?

What's your dream car? - 12/11/2002 19:09

Ok, I'm being a sucker for starting stupid topics, but the top-speed conversation in the other forum has really got me fired up.

So, what is/are your favorite dream car(s)?

For me, there's 6. In order:
1994 Ford Escort wagon - manual transmission - in silver (owned it)
2000 Volvo V70 wagon - manual transmission - in anything but black, red, or silver (own it now)
early 2000's Mercedes Benz E320 wagon - manual transmission (hopefully) - in silver (will own it in 2010)
early 2000's Jaguar XK8 - manual transmission (praying for it) - in hunter green (will own @ midlife crisis)
1981, 82, or 83 Delorean - manual transmission (it's out there) - in stainless steel (will own sometime soon)
80's Lotus Turbo Esprit - manual transmission - in get-pulled-over-for-just-pulling-out-my-driveway red (...someday)

Why the Lotus? I have a fond memory of visiting this one exotic car dealer once a year while on family vacation.
Why the Delorean? My dad used to work for him and when the suckah went broke, he owed us some $$. So, I'ma own one of those rides some day.

How about ya'll?

Lucky for me, I am driving the car I've wanted since I learned about it. A 2002 Saab 9-3 Viggen Coupe. I've had it over 140MPH. Top speed is 155 (electronically governed), but something didn't feel safe once I got over 140, so I stopped. I know, I know.... I'm a wuss. I will max it out someday though.

The only other car I lust over is a DeLorean. Manual trans is the only way to go on ANY car.

I've been working on the perfect four car garage. I havn't managed to narow it down that far though. 1) McLaren F1 2) H1 Hummer open top 3) Acura/Honda NSX 4) Delorean 5) Viper 6) Sparrow.

If you figure the Hummer can live outside, and the Sparrow will fit in between two of the others, it should just fit in a four car garage.

Re: What's your dream car? - 13/11/2002 00:57

I guess I don't have quite the dreams you guys do, but I currently have my dream car. When I was a kid, I wanted an old Mustang convertible. So, when I was 15, I bought a '68 Mustang convertible and fixed it up. Started driving it the day I turned 16. Love it.

Currently, I have a fascination with the Acura NSX. It's a beautiful car, and I could see myself actually affording one.

I suppose a McLaren F1 would be nice too.

Nowhere to put an Empeg in a McLaren, it has no radio and a Kenwood CD changer with a simple control, so it's not much use to those of the Empeg religion.

3) Bentley Turbo Azure R

And all can take an empeg and big amps, as well as my family!

  • About 30 more I can't think of off the top of my head

I remember seeing pictures of it on Pistonheads ages ago, but cannot find them anymore, and didn't save them off either. It wouldn't surprise me if it was just the race car with a few bits of leather though.

I didn't think it had any rear seats ?

Great, an even better power/weight ratio (and lets face it with TVR power figures it may need a little help )

Even more speculatively than the others, because I don't even hold a driving licence:

    1) Jaguar E-Type convertible
    2) Peugeot 206CC (I don't know what it's like to drive, and those vents in the bonnet make it look terribly aggressive, but I like the basic idea)
    3) Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental cabriolet
    4) That Fiat thing a bit like a miniature MX-5, can't remember what it's called
    5) Anything made by Caterham

I saw an all-white example of no.3 parked somewhere once, and it looked amazing. Not sure about the 40hp, 8 litre engine though.

    Plymouth Superbird

It would probably be a crime for me to own one because:
    -I'm hard on cars
-I don't have the time to take proper care of it
-This is one of those low production models, a NASCAR cheat...

    Note:
Although it created quite an impression on the street, the wing did almost no aerodynamic good under 90 mph.

What a shame. so I'd only tickle it occasionally.

Leave folding tin roofs to Mercedes Benz. My next door neighbour gave up and sold it after 10 months - the boot has enough room for a modest amp for your Empeg, but, what the hell, you've got to make some sacrifices for your religion!

Mercedes E class something or other.

Nope, not fictional at all. Although I think the song refers to a much older model than the one linked in this thread, I could be wrong.

And I think that the name might also refer to a Ferrari model, not sure. I'll have to go check the Rush FAQ on that one.

    ricin,

A fellow Porsche fan, I love it... nice choices too! Personally, any one of these would do, but I would add the Ruf RTurbo to the list.

BTW - why in the hell did Porsche make a 996 Turbo with an optional automatic. Come on, would any self-respecting male really buy one of these cars for his wife?

My list, my list is way too long. I couldn't possibly nail it down to 5. Basically, it would include any cars considered to be "ultimate American muscle cars", plus and any of the ultimate European sports cars from the last 3 decades. Oh yeah, and the NSX.

My current currently owned dream cars:

Nice Chevelle, looks like the badges say 454 but it's hard to tell. If so, LS5 or LS6, 4spd or Auto? I used to have a '65 Malibu SS but it's not nearly the same type of car as the '70 is. Back in '65 the SS was more of a trim package than a performance option. The '70 is clearly a true American muscle car.

And I think that the name might also refer to a Ferrari model, not sure. I'll have to go check the Rush FAQ on that one.

Yes. Ferrari 166 Barchetta. Although there have been later Ferrari models that co-opted the Barchetta name, when you say Barchetta to a Tifosi, you are talking about the model 166 Barchetta, produced starting in 1949 into the early 1950's. I believe it was the first Ferrari road car sold to the public.

The model designation "166" refers to the displacement of a single cylinder of the V-12 engine -- 166 cc (and a fraction) giving a total displacement of 1995 cc.

By today's standards, it isn't much of a car -- a well-tuned Civic (maybe with a few minor performance mods) would probably out-run it. These first-of-the-breed Ferraris are very rare, and very expensive. If you could find one for sale (unlikely) just give the seller a big wad of cash and take your change in McLaren F1's.

Ok, I have to 'fess up here and <looking for the whisper font> admit to having been the owner of a 996 turbo. With tiptronic... In my defence I would say that this was when I was living in Tokyo, a city which kind of defines the term "gridlock", and where the use of anything other than an auto box is just madness on a stick. The only time I ever got it out of second gear was when I went to track days at the ex-F1 Fuji circuit south of Tokyo. And there I was too busy hanging on to the steering wheel praying that I was going to make it through the 120 degree right hander at the end of the very long straight to be doing distracting stuff like, er, changing gear by myself.

I actually preferred the 993, and have gone back to a 993 now. Favourite car would definitely be the very last 993 Turbo S to come off the production line.

    (then again, i have one...)

For a brief moment I was tempted to answer in McLaren, Ferrari, Porsche style, but I actually don't really want one of those. For me, a car must carry at least four people and have decent amount of trunk space before it can even be considered. I drove a 911 Turbo for a week one time, and it turned out to be rather inconvenient.

This is of course, working from the standpoint of limiting this discussion to what your "primary" day-to-day car would be.

I had a friend back home that ran the local Armacoat business and he had his old suburban completely covered, except he did it in yellow and black tiger strips, it was pretty cool looking, and nothing would hurt it

I had a friend in the UK who painted his old mini with hammerite when the rust was getting serious. It did the trick

Wow... That's a fine looking vehicle. Apparently you have to be REAL careful where you open those doors though. I wouldn't recommend parking on a curb. And I bet that windshield is a bitch to get replaced when someone cracks it with a brick looking for the stereo you can obviously afford.

A bit off topic, but the funniest car I've seen was here in New Orleans. A guy downtown has a Miata with bull horns on the grill, a cow bell hanging from the rear-view, and a jersey spot paint job. It looks like a Gateway commercial. His vanity plate? MOOATA. I laughed solid for 15 minutes.

Ahhh. That's one of my friends' all-time favorite cars. Possibly his absolute favorite. That had the Holley carbs, too, didn't it?

Ah. Yes, that must be it, but somehow it doesn't look as good as I remembered it...
Well, for whatever it's worth, the reason I was so confused is that despite having an Italian name, the thing I was thinking of isn't a Fiat at all. It's a Suzuki, it's called the Cappuccino (more), my brother's fiancee's sister's husband has one, and I got to ride in it (briefly) last weekend. It rules.
