LOP.com hijacking your browser and desktop - 24/11/2002 18:17

This isn't something new but I've just stumbled across a discussion about lop dot com and thought I should share the advice. Please don't be curious and go there. The following search should give you all the information you need to convince you not to visit: http://groups.google.com/groups?q=lop.com&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en.

I have it blocked on my firewall just in case someone sends me a link or if I get redirected there. One easy fix is to put a reference to it in the hosts file with the 127.0.0.1 loopback IP.

You have to actually accept the warning dialog that pops up to get all that crap installed. This is assuming you've got the IE security setting for Internet set to medium or high as the prompt for signed activeX controls only appears by default for those levels. Read the page at SpywareInfo.

It didn't do anything to me when I went to the page but then I've turned off most of the crap in IE6 and have ZoneAlarm to disable popups. Oddly whenever I've freshly installed Windows and IE, the security settings for the zones in IE are all set to custom. I turn them all to medium apart from restricted sites which I set to high and it works fine for all the sites I use.

I also turn off sound and music in webpages because I've yet to find a page which had it that wasn't instantly annoying as hell. Can't disable the Flash animations that have sound though like that IBM advert from a while back.

I had a problem with this once before... many months ago. Having no idea what was going on, I just did what I do everytime I manage to screw things up (I'm quite good at that ).

Now, in order to prevent it from happening again, because I might one day hit a site that redirects to it, what urls / ip addresses do I need to block? Will blocking the ones listed at the bottom of the page you linked to on google do the job?
