kernel debuggers, in patch form, for Linux.

I love this little blurb, taken verbatim from the kgdb website:

"modifications to fault handlers - Kernel gives control to debugger when an unexpected fault fault occurs."

An unexpected fault fault? I guess that's much worse than an unexpected fault?

Looks like they need to debug their documentation a little bit.

I think this is a double fault. There are triple faults, also.

Oh okay, my fault.

choose death

What if the options are kdb, kgdb, or the KGB?

Or KMFDM.....

Which one?

Re: if you can choose kdb, kgdb or death - 07/01/2003 15:43

Hah, that's funny, I knew someone who was in the CMU KGB a few years back.

Who?

Re: if you can choose kdb, kgdb or death - 08/01/2003 16:48

The Keep Geeks Busy organization?

Re: if you can choose kdb, kgdb or death - 08/01/2003 16:58

That would be the one. I never actually joined, but I did show up and throw pennies at the treasurer a few times.

Re: if you can choose kdb, kgdb or death - 08/01/2003 17:05

A friend/cow-orker went to CMU. I asked if he was ever in the KGB and he said "The Keep Geeks Busy club? They were a strange bunch... And no I wasn't one of them..."

Deanna Rubin. She was a rather prominent member of a BBS system in Philly that I used to frequent back in the day. Quite the "opinionated intellectual snob" type, but fun to argue with on occasion.

Re: if you can choose kdb, kgdb or death - 08/01/2003 19:59

Small world. She still shows up on our instant message system, despite having moved away.

Our instant message system (Zephyr, from MIT) is ripe with argument.

Small world.

Ain't it, though? It's funny how many of my old friends and acquaintences from the BBS scene I've run into here or there. Never really kept in touch with Dee after she went to CMU and I went to the State Penn. Moved away, eh? Not back to Philly, I presume?

Our instant message system (Zephyr, from MIT) is ripe with argument.

In stark contrast to the Empeg BBS! And what's CMU doing using MIT software? That's like the cable guy ordering DirecTV isn't it?

Other side of the country.

And what's CMU doing using MIT software?
We don't have NIH syndrome. Every time someone tries to get NIH syndrome I berate them. Sometimes it even works.

Re: if you can choose kdb, kgdb or death - 08/01/2003 20:40

Heh yeah, but there is a fair amount of friendly competition between CMU and MIT...

Re: if you can choose kdb, kgdb or death - 08/01/2003 20:44

I work for Computing Services. I have no "friendly competition" with the people who work for MIT I/S. On the contrary my wife and I just visited one of them on occasion of his birthday 4 weeks ago. What the recruiters do, I don't care about: CMU was a crappy experience for me, and while it looks like it's improved, that doesn't help me now.

What was crappy about it?

Re: if you can choose kdb, kgdb or death - 09/01/2003 09:46

The whole experience

The facilities that existed for leisure were thoroughly lame. It didn't help that the old student union building was failling apart.

Of course the new one isn't a student union. It's a university center, and the governance of such proves that it's not a student union.

i was at CMU for grad school in 1989-91. i haven't been back to see the new university center, but i don't recall having any free time to hang out in the student union, anyway.

Really. I've never heard of anyone judging a university on the quality of the university-provided entertainment before. Lack of local drinking establishments and nude nightclubs, yes, but student union, no.

You needed to be more of a slacker.

Re: if you can choose kdb, kgdb or death - 09/01/2003 10:32

Ohio State has an ice rink and a bowling alley. CMU has crap.

The temporary student union hosted the CMU model railroad club, in an old building. They found no room for us in their new $20-some million dollar building.

The experience was wholly unpleasant, and I hate them for it, which is why I've been taking their money for 8 years now.

I hope you're slacking off as much as possible. You wouldn't want to be providing value for that money, would you? That doesn't seem like a good way to get your own back.

Yeah, the university I went to didn't even have a student union in any real sense (there was a stationery shop, but that was basically it). Of course, the fatal flaw in that theory is that the rest of Cambridge didn't have any decent nightlife in those days either. What was I thinking?

We had a Campus Center. Then part way through, they added an extension to it, and renamed the whole thing the Student Life Center. You could tell what year people were in by whether they called it the CC or the SLC.

Edit: Oh, it had an arcade/pool hall in it, which was better than the arcade in the nearby plaza.

The building I work in changed names from "UCC" to "Cyert Hall" just before I became staff.

I had the sign from the ceremony, which read "Welcome to UCC" with UCC crossed out and Cyert written in over it, on my dorm room door until I stopped being a student. I have no comment on how it got there.
