Avatars - 10/02/2003 12:04

(Admin note) There is no longer a need to attach an avatar to a post to use it. Simply visit your profile to upload an avatar.)

Apologies for starting a new thread for this, but I want to change my avatar, and need to stash it somewhere.

If you're interested, it's a picture of me, relaxing after a day on the slopes at Sauze d'Oulx in the Italian Alps, taken in March 2002. Unfortunately, the shots from Courchevel (French Alps) this year don't look so good -- it was too cloudy. The snow was great, though.

(My previous avatar was from Ibiza, 2001, but my hair has grown back since then, and the Sauze one is more representative).

I humbly suggest that people who wish to stash their avatar somewhere could do worse than to follow up to this post. A paragraph or two about the photo might be cool, too.

Ironicially mine isn't hosted off empeg.comms.net, but instead empeg.miniinfo.net (the actual logo site). Since the servers were combined, I never bothered changing it.

And the nickname Drakino came from twisting Draco after seeing Dragonheart. The avatar is from some dragon picture I found around the same time.

I so wish I could still climb. Had to give it up after I tore my rotator cuff (completely unrelated). It just never healed fully enough, I have a hard time even climbing a rock wall now. I refused surgery, and therapy took about a year to get ~90% of the strength back. It's my right shoulder, and can still come out though, if at the wrong angle with my weight on it. I tried indoor climbing a few months back, and 45 minutes it, crossing the ceiling, it popped out. Yeowch. Glad I had a belay.

One of my 5 piranhas. They are about 7 to 8 inches long now. They live in a 125 gallon tank with a jack dempsey. They eat other fish and various raw meats.

Bleach = Nirvana Bleach. Nirvana was one of my favorite bands. It pained me that 98% of the losers in my high school thought "Nevermind" was Nirvana's first album. I did lots of BBSing back in the day, so this was my handle.

In college, I became involved in Quake/TF clans, and had to modify my handle accordingly, and simply appended the clan initials to my nickname. Back then, it was CYA, for Clan You_Asshole. The clan was named after the 2nd Novell Personal Netware network my friends had for lan parties back in the 90s (we used netware to share files). When you booted and the drivers loaded, it would ask: "Would you like to log in [Network Name]" We simply named our network You_Asshole, to complete the sentence.

Our clan died because most of the people in it failed/dropped out of college because they played too much Quake/TF. Some other friends and myself formed a lan party group aptly named LPB - for Lan Party of Baltimore. For those familiar with online gaming - you all should know what an LPB is. We have lan parties in the Baltimore area about every month or two. And guess what cool little device provides the tunes at such events??

So, the fish and my nickname have absolutely nothing to do with eachother. Someday I'll set up a webcam so anyone can watch my fish eat things.

I don't what to say about this picture, other than the fact that I found it in Mac OS X as one of the pictures you can select for user accounts. For some reason, it's not included in later versions.

As far as the user name goes, it's short for A. David Wright, which was my name until several years ago, when I gave up on getting people to call me by my middle name, and went back to my first name.

Dignan17,

The Reverend beat me to it...I live down in Hartsville, SC. My brother (also an empeg owner) lives in Mechanicsville. It's a good meeting place as my sis and her husband live near Baltimore. I've been to KD probably 10 times since I moved out from Cali in '90. It has gotten significantly better as far as rides go. You should check it out again.

I went to Busch Gardens this year as well (March). I enjoyed it quite a bit. The themed areas are much cooler and the shops and food are better. The coasters that they have are good too. Kings Dominion is up to like 10 coasters now, including 3 of those high-speed launch rides . It's definitely worth another trip when you get the time.

Posted by: pgrzelak

Re: Avatars - 13/02/2003 19:41

It is Led Zeppelin. The image refers to the flight of Iccarus. This was used as the symbol for their Swan Song label.
Posted by: lectric

Re: Avatars - 13/02/2003 20:06

It's a picture by William Rimmer entitled:
Evening or The Fall of the Day

Zeppelin reference:

The famous Swan Song symbol that Zeppelin adopted as the logo for their record label was borrowed from an 1851 oil-on-canvas painting by William Rimmer entitled "Evening Fall Of Day." The figure in the painting is the Greek sun god Apollo. The painting is not, as some people would have you believe, of Icarus or Daedalus. These two are also figures from Greek mythology. Daedalus is, according to legend, supposed to have crafted a set of wings from feathers and wax for himself and Icarus which they could use to escape from their prison on Crete to freedom in Greece. Unfortunately, Icarus being the younger of the two thought it might be a lark to fly a little higher, and flew too close to the sun which melted his wings and he plunged to his death in a sea, which is still known as the Icarian sea. Icarus' first flight was also his swan song. Daedalus also designed the labyrinth on Crete for King Mino's minotaur, which was the reason for his imprisonment, because he alone knew the secrets of the labyrinth.

Re: Avatars - 14/02/2003 10:50

That's unlucky - it's a beautiful area when you can see it, something that I miss in the Eastern US ski areas. (Predominantly below the tree-line).

But that's mountain weather for you...

That reminds me of a story from my stay with a couple of friends in Val Thorens. (For those who don't know, VT is the highest resort in Europe, and is about 500m (vertically) up the valley from Les Menuires.)

We'd spent the morning skiing down to and in Les Menuires, and had eaten lunch there. In the early afternoon, an unpredicted storm suddenly moved in, and lifts started to shut down. We obviously started to panic about getting back up the valley, and hotfooted it to any lift that was going vaguely in the right direction for us to be able to traverse back to VT. We did very well for an hour or so, until we got to the last lift that we needed to take, whereapon it shut down whilst we were in line.
At this point, we (and a few hundred other people in the same boat) realise that we're 'only' at the wrong end of a red run (US - single black diamond) from being able to ski a blue run down into VT. Like sheep, we start following the herd, walking up this bloody steep red run with skis and poles slung over our shoulders. At some point the snow started to fall and get blown about by the increasing winds. It's probably difficult to visualise, but there were literally hundreds of people laboring up a mountain during a snow storm.

After about 30 minutes of this I was knackered. My back was killing me and every step was painful. And I could work out that we were only about 1/3 of the way up the run. My doubts started to grow as to the sanity of our adventure, and more I thought about it, the more nagging they became. So I shouted at my 2 friends to stop. At this point, I should mention that we were all Scout Leaders at the time.

I observed that we were making slow progress up a steep mountain during a snowstorm with dusk approaching. And that we were at about 8000 feet altitude, with no torches, no emergency sacks, no e-rations, no compass, no decent map (only a piste map), no water etc. And that if any of our Scouts even *thought* about attempting such an endeavour under such circumstances that *we'd* kill them.

It really was an epiphany. We took a couple of minutes to get our breath back, during which time we watched hordes of people continuing their crazy ascent, including some people whom we'd befriended in our hotel. We suggested that they were going the wrong way, but they continued on up the mountain. Then we put on our skis and went the other way, back down to Les Menuires.

We had about 30 minutes of the best skiing all week. Although visibility was reduced and goggles were necessary, the piste was covered with a couple of inches of virgin powder, and we had it all to ourselves. Even the notorious 'kamikaze' bowl entering the resort was empty.

So we get back to LM, and discover that the local bus company is contracted to give free rides up the valley when the lifts get shut early. There was obviously going to be a long wait, so we went and warmed up in a bar for a while, and eventually got on the bus about an hour later. 45 minutes after that, just after we've finished storing our ski gear in the locker room, our friends stumbled in, looking like Death. They had just got back, nearly two and a half hours after we'd last seen them. It turned out that when they'd got to the top of the red run, the wind had been against them, and they'd had to push themselves all the way down the blue run too.

When I think back, I still can't believe just how crazy a horde of people can be. I'm amazed that more people don't die in such circumstances.

Re: Avatars - 14/02/2003 18:54

I agree, it's a beautiful place, and 650km of runs (the largest skiing area in the world, apparently) can't be bad! I have very fond memories of that area - my first year of skiing was in Val Thorens, when we had beautiful weather all week. After that week, I was hooked.

However, I don't think Les Menuires is that great for beginners (one of whom we had with us this year), since the only blue runs seem to be the, as you put it, "kamikaze" bowl and the Vallons run at the other side of the resort. It struck me as being even worse than Val D'Isere, which when I was there seemed to have only had one blue back into the resort, and that was closed! Since it was only my second year of skiing, I generaly took a lift back down, oddly enough.

Still, we managed some stupid distances this year - all the way to the far end of Courcheval and back by early afternoon, despite the weather. I may even forgive Ian for his map-reading balls-up, when we found that after an hour of hard skiing from our morning break we had ended up back at the same restaurant, instead of being in a totally different valley for lunch!

Oh well, anyone care to guess which day that photo was taken? Clue - it was taken at 6.30am on a Saturday morning at Heathrow where 3 of my best friends (also wearing wigs) had just collected me. Sometime in the past 3 years.

Re: Avatars - 08/04/2003 22:11

Hmm. Big hints;

That photo was taken at about 7.30am one saturday morning in the car park at Heathrow airport. I had just arrived on the red-eye, and walked out of customs to find 3 of my friends looking ridiculous.

The following morning we all went to Villa Park in Birmingham to watch an underdog showdown with Liverpool in the semi finals of the FA Cup. My team, a lowly second division side, effectively ranking 60 places below Liverpool, held them goal-less for 73 minutes but eventually went down 2-1. (Hey we got a goal!). Not a bad result considering that Michael Owen's salary alone at the time exceeded the entire annual turnover of my team. And he was consistently thwarted by an ex-dustbin-man who had started when the team were non-league part-timers.
Obviously we were gutted at the end of a dream, but immensely pleased to have had it to start with. Having been a Liverpool fan in my early teens, it was great to finally see them play, and a live rendition of "You'll never walk alone" by 18000 'scousers' is very moving.
On a personal note it did mean that I didn't have to fork over more cash to fly back for the Cup Final. That weekend was expensive enough after the flights, game tickets, train fare and obligatory beers and kebabs had all been paid for.

So the starter question for 10 points is "Which date was that photo taken?", and for a further 10 points, "Which team do I support?"

Anyhoo - this frog is just a bit more colourful than my last one, which is nice

It was a lot easier than the pain that Dignan went through...
Posted by: Dignan

Re: Avatars - 25/06/2003 21:10

Sweet!! That was totally my second choice.

The pain was mostly due to the fact that I thought I had the episode in avi or mpg but instead only had it in rm. This required some rare program that can convert rm files.

So how did you go about it? My method was to import the converted video into Premiere, cut to around the clip that I wanted, and export a GIF but with the video cropped to 65x75. Then it was just a matter of fine tuning it in Jasc's Animation Shop.
Posted by: TheRhino

Re: Avatars - 26/06/2003 07:43

Heh heh. Basically, I just stole it from the Planet Family Guy site. I was prepared to go to the great lengths that you did. Honest. It was easier to right click and "Save As", though....

Re: Avatars - 26/06/2003 08:00

Posted by: mtempsch

Re: Avatars - 28/06/2003 08:00

I wish I could have, but I had a project due at work the next week.

Seeing Patrick's toys and the new empeg products alone would have made the trip more than worth it, and that's not even counting the wonderful hospitality of Rob S. and all the interesting people I met!

Maybe with some better planning next year I can get over to Germany next year, or something like that. I remember a museum of technology in Munich (called the Deutsches Museum?) from a high school trip that had the most amazing displays of cool stuff, from the first mechanical attempts at computers, to cross sections of jet engines, etc. I'd like to go back there and have some more time.

Yeah, that museum was specifically suggested to me. But when planning our itinerary, we decided not to go out of our way to try to see museums since we can see plenty of good museums here at home if we want to.

Although we did kill some time in the science museum in London because it was close to our hotel and convenient. But it wasn't like we planned it into the trip or anything.

I think it's funny too, but that's a little big. Of course, I'm not one to talk.

Here's one that I made:

It helps to at least make your animation the standard avatar size (in pixels, that is). That's something I wish everyone would do.

Muchas Gracias!

That's right. My guess is that you had it keep the aspect ratio when you resized it, because it was 65x42. That's fine, actually, since that's smaller than the board's avatar size. But it doesn't look as good when the board resizes it.

Sorry about that Tony, I am not very good with pics I did resize it this time, but how are the other people ataching a file and then viewing it in the same post? The only way I can figure to do it is to attach it then see what the file number ends up being and then editing the post. I had to resize it anyway because it squished his head.

Not that the site where I currently have this avatar is likely to get too much of a hammering, since I'm not what you call a prolific poster by any stretch of the imagination, but I might as well store it on the bbs for safe keeping.

Not a lot to say about the picture, it's just your standard mid-70's primary school photo. Probably only noteworthy for the hideous shirt and tie (although I have a shirt that's not a million miles away from that colour even today! But I'm certainly not wearing a tie like that again!)

New avatar - the pic is from a theatre arts course I had in University. It was called Make-up and Special effects. This was my final project - it's taken from Ron Perlman's character Vincent from the TV series "Beauty and the Beast" with makeup effects by Rick Baker. Both of whom are back for Hellboy later this year.

The course was, without a doubt, the best course I had during my 5 years at PSU. Unfortunately, it had nothing to do with my engineering degree .

Just stashing my avatar here - much more reliable than my webserver!

BTW, it's not obvious, but I'm carrying my empeg on my back in this photo - taken at Royal Holloway University.

Oh, I'm not going to use that one. I was just linking it because I thought it was funny.

I think it is time for a new avatar. My old MAME Gauntlet II one was getting a bit old...

Of course, with the new functionality of this board, this thread is not required for Avatar changing. The upload function makes life very easy.

Re: Avatars - 04/06/2006 10:46

Does it work now ?

Re: Avatars - 04/06/2006 15:18

Yep. Just hit the avatar section of your profile, and upload the one you want.

Re: Avatars - 04/06/2006 16:10

Nope still doesn't work for me anyway. I check upload avitar, browse to where it it located, hit submit, then it takes me back to the main index page.

Re: Avatars - 03/10/2009 23:07

Wow. That's an old thread.

The "My Profile" page lets you upload an image there now.

Re: Avatars - 03/10/2009 23:39

Which I discovered, when I went to replace the old with the new.

Re: Avatars - 03/10/2009 23:52

Fun to look back at the thread though. I should go through the DB and replace all the empeg.comms.net URLs with empegbbs.com, as it would bring back most of them.
