It has begun.

I'm not a religious man, but if there is a God, may he bless us all

*edit*
fixed link to a different article. strange. I went to drudgereport.com and they had it linked to an article which is no longer available. lasted only a few minutes.

**Second Edit**
I found the first link again

That link was broken, but Google has links to all kinds of articles. Among interesting headlines:

"Troops enter Iraqi demilitarised zone" (although, on the radio this morning, U.S. spokespeople were denying these reports)

"US Warplanes Bomb Southern Iraq; Forces Poised" (well, we've been bombing them on and off for years)

I suppose it all depends on how you define "start".

That new article doesn't talk about anything the first link I had talked about. From what I can remember is that fighting has already broke out in one of the ports and cruise missiles are now being loaded onto planes. With the loading of the missiles it seems that we are mere hours away from full invasion. All of the other articles that I've read, besides my first link, have the US denying everything including entering the DMZ.

Conspiracy Theorists start your engines.

I guess they'll also try and get it fought in quarters rather than the usual halves, to leave more ad breaks...

Which servers do you play on BF1942 and what is your alias? (I'm also a huge fan).

I think a better poll would be: when will it end?

My money is on <4 days start to finish.

Not a chance, but one can hope.

Re: When will the war start? - 19/03/2003 15:25

Just like "start", you have to define "end" better. Do you mean:

- Saddam Hussein is killed / captured / exiled?

- Iraqi troops (with or without their leadership) surrender en masse?

- An American-imposed administrator is "formally" declared the leader of Iraq?

- Iraqi oil production capacity reaches at least 80% of its pre-war / pre-devastation value?

- G.W. Bush declares the war ended?

It's important to note that any and all of these things can occur independently from each other.

My money is on <4 days start to finish.

You remind me of the eager enlistees in WW-I and WW-II who were worried that the fighting would be over before they had a chance to get in on the action.

There were probably people thinking similarly in August of 1964 after a little incident known as Gulf of Tonkin.

I truly hope that I am wrong, but I honestly feel that 10 years from now this Iraq adventure will be looked upon with the same amazement and disdain that we apply today to the debacle of Vietnam.

Oh, we'll "win" the war, no doubt, if by winning you mean we'll blow up more tanks, kill more soldiers, and destroy more infrastructure than the Iraqis do. But the long-term price we pay for this pyrrhic victory will be staggering.

Re: When will the war start? - 19/03/2003 19:56

Well, WW III seems to have kicked off, according to BBC news 24.

Reminds me of the immortal line from 'Not the Nine O'Clock News', ie "America is making up for being late for the first two world wars by being bang on time for the next one"

Depressing.
