Not that this is what you were talking about at all, but I thought that I'd point out that http://www.howstuffworks.com/'s Marshall Brain really is named Marshall Brain. I've been to a party at his house and even seen his driver's license (unsurprisingly, many folks don't believe that's his real name, so I think that's a farily common occurrance). He was the instructor in my first college programming course, and one of the better teachers I've ever had. He did make us call him Marshall, though, and not Mr. Brain.

Reminds me of the time we went to the UK for a global conference. My co-worker said something to the effect that he's "not a lush like Chrissie." He meant he doesn't drink as much as she does, the Brits thought he wasn't as "loose" as she was... (which we had no idea if she was or not) And then there's the fanny pack/bum bag thing that's always good for a laugh...

I saw it... they parked the trailer outside Leeds University and lots of people asked if it was a wind-up or something.

I dont know what they are made of now, but it used to be all the left-over bits of a pig (lips and arses as my brother-in-law said, but mostly liver, heart, kidneys etc.)

Ross' frozen beefburgers list "Beef heart" amongst their ingredients so I refuse to (or can't make myself) eat them. Birds Eye's beef burgers on the other hand don't list organs in their ingredients so obviously they're 'safe'.

Sausages? Sheesh, most folks would never eat them if they knew (or thought about) what went into those.

Well... Here's a quick guide

Piss = I need to take a piss = I need to go and relieve myself
Pissed = I'm really pissed = I'm really drunk
Pissing = It's pissing it down = It's raining really hard

But we also sometimes also use pissed/pissing in terms of annoyance as well... It's all context!

In general, X'ed Off means annoyed, vis:

Pissed Off = I'm really pissed off/that really pissed her off = I'm really annoyed/that really annoyed her.

As Tony says, "piss off" means "get lost". Again, in general "X off" means "get lost".

I remember being taught at school that most commercial beef mince contains a little heart meat, and that in fact it would be pretty tasteless without it. On the other hand, he may have been winding us up: you can never tell with schoolteachers.

It wasn't just the "Mr. Brains" part. There's also the Faggot Family, who, through some stroke of misfortune, is named Doody, which is (at least in some places) also slang for shit, and that the prime ingredient in these faggots is pork, which is slang for sex.

It's all just very... non-translatable.

Having eaten beef heart without having it ground up in a hamburger, I'd really have no issues with eating it as part of a burger. My mother just boiled it up in a pot. Sliced thin with a little mustard, and it's okay stuff, though not exactly the most tender of cuts.

"By-products". Whatever that means. Doesn't bother me that much. I've eaten pig's ear, haggis (though probably not the really good stuff, since this was in Toronto, not Scotland), and chicken feet. I haven't tried head cheese, yet, but then, I haven't been anywhere where it's been offered.

Hehe. That's the whole point of sausages. They were originally invented to sell to the poor masses who couldn't afford cuts of meat. Whilst I don't think that I'd like the truly 'original' version, modern UK sausages taste a *lot* better than the US version that don't contain any offal. Fotunately in Boston I can easily get Irish sausages that are very similar to UK sausages. (From my local 7-11 no less!)

According to a recipe I've just been reading, "faggots are enjoyed all over Yorkshire" (from whence I post) and are of Roman origin.

Curiously I've never been offered a faggot in Yorkshire (Careful: the meatball one) and only half the Yorkshire folk in my office have ever heard of one, none regard it as a local delicacy.

You didn't read my full post [short as it was], I was referring to the thread title in my reply i.e. that "Mr Brains is kosher (i.e. genuine).

Of course the product is not, given what its probably made of.
