National Dress - 01/05/2003 02:01

Im off to Norway for the 17th of May national day with my girlfriend who (being Norwegian) will be wearing her national dress.

There have been several jokes at my expense as to me wearing a pin stripe suit, bowler hat and carrying a briefcase (stereotypical English), but it did get me wondering as to what the English national dress actually is?
Scotland's is pretty easy to guess, isnt Ireland's similar? Wales, I dont have a clue, and I was starting to think begin English I might end up looking like a Morris Dancer

Does anyone know what it should be?
Also, what would be USA's national dress (assuming there is one), or Canada's?

Faded blue jeans and a white t-shirt. See the cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." for confirmation.
or Canada's?
Faded blue jeans and a white t-shirt.... and a cold can of Molson in hand.

You need an umbrella to go with that bowler hat.

Add a toque or earmuffs, and a pair of snowmobile boots for us Cannucks.

No particular offense intended but I always thought the welsh national dress was a pair of wellies and a sheep

Depends where in England, I guess - how about a flat hat and whippet for Yorkshiremen, a shell-suit for Scousers, a Toon Army T-shirt for Geordies, and the "Pearly King/Queen" get-up for Cockneys?

(Well, that's the population of four areas insulted... which does include myself, BTW!)

This FAQ kinda agrees with you - a couple of others mentioned the suit+bowler hat.

I am friends with a genuine Morris dancer (from Wickham Morris).

I tried it a couple of times when I was at events with them (no, I did not wear bells and only held one hankie!), Morris music is usually influenced by beer, as you can see from their emblem and main sponsor, and that goes down well with me!

Good find!
I found this interesting:

NORTHERN IRELAND
Early Irish dress, based on Gaelic and Norse costumes

Surprised if theirs does, that the English dress doesnt have Norse influence.
Tell a viking he's got nice bells, go on, I dare you

The brolly, apple suit joke, yeah, Ive had them all, I think Morris dancer outfit is on the card's, I'll probably make the local paper with that on

Essex is know for the 'Essex Girl' - stereotyped as being blonde and stupid. Also may have red stilettos and boyfriends called Dean who have an Escort Xr3i.

Hundreds of sites such as http://www.iwinterbottom.freeserve.co.uk/Jokes/Essex_Girls.htm exist!
