Anybody know of a hosting service that will take your server dump it in a rack and provide power and a little bandwidth for a reasonable price? I have an older Netra T1 that I never use because the damn thing makes so much noise I don't want to listen to it in my house. It would be nice to colo it somewhere and run my personal website and email off it and provide some basic services for a few friends. I know there are a few people around here who do website hosting, how did you get started?

I suspect you'll find that unless you know someone, colocating is excessivly expensive. The real problem is that if it's your server, then eventually you're going to want physical access to it, so you're probably going to need some place local. Have you called your local mom&pop&(and their geek son) ISPs to see if they'll do it? They're probably your best bet.

A better option is probably the Cyberonic DSL deal with a 1.5/768 line to your house for $50 a month. Then put your loud server down in a basement or up in an attic.

Yeah, good point. I do live in the California bay area so it seems like there might be someplace around here.

Nope, but that isn't a bad idea. Thanks.

Well, I already have dsl, but I would like to be able to burst above that speed for the occasional file transfer. 1.5 symmetric would probably be good enough, but I don't have a basement/attic as I live in an apartment and there is nowhere here I could put the netra and not be able to here it.

webhostingtalk.com is a good place to locate Colocation hosts.

I know a guy named Jon, that owns a colocation facility in Dallas Texas called Cologuys. http://www.cologuys.com/ E-mail em to see what kinda deals they have going on for colocation right now.

In fact, I'm currently looking for a new colocation facility cause mine went tits up two days ago... I'm not happy.
