Don't eat at Planet Hollywood - 13/09/2003 15:13

The Planet Hollywood restaurant I worked at closed without giving us any warning whatsoever. They felt that the money they were putting into that restaurant could be best put towards other things (like the casino they are making/ renovating in Las Vegas. I hope they file for bankruptcy a third time.......I got to tell the guy from corporate that he was an "a-hole" though...That was fun....

The Planet Hollywood here in NZ is closing. I've never been there, never wanted to go there.

Yes, you are correct.
NZ is [local] shorthand for New Zealand.

BTW: The Planet Hollywood here in Auckland was/is crap - I went to it once as some of my nieces and nephews wanted to go there.
Never been back - theres better places to eat - No wonder its closing.

What did you do there? Waiter? Cook?

As a restaurant manager who has shut down a few, I can tell you that NO ONE ever finds out until about 2 days before hand, and you can never tell the hourly employees until the actual day. Think about it, no one would bother comming to work if they knew that they were out of a job in 3 days, or if they did, they would just end up taking all the crap that was there.

I know it sucks, but that's the reality. Back in January '02 I was a manager of a restaurant in Boston. I found out we were closing 3 days before we did. I had started seeing a hostess there (no one knew about us) and the next time she came into work I asked her

"So, what are you doing tomorrow?"

"Oh well, I guess I'm going to work and then I might go out somewhere"

I said to her " Ok, now try saying that without the 'going to work' part"

I hate the restaurant business.

I don't think this is unique to resturants. I worked at computer city and they did the same thing. It sucks but what alternative do they have. If they told everyone most of the people would just quit or try to get some revenge by trashing the place and stealing stuff.

It is pretty sad now-a-days with the "Postal" syndrome and revenge tactics that people can't be let go in a dignified way. I guess most IT people are called to another room and told they are being let go. Then they are not allowed to return to their desk incase the person wants to do a quick two second "termination" of the network. At the very least, it seems that security escorts are common too. Quite sad.

Yeah, I've known about two people who were going to be let go before they knew. One of them was just getting to his one year and approached me with "could you talk to Steve about getting me a raise?" I wasn't supposed to break the news, but what was I supposed to say. "Yeah, ummm I'll mention it." At least they let him stay for another month before he was finally let go. The other guy simply got told to show up at the main office where they had a box with all of his stuff. No severence or anything. I felt so bad for him, espeically since I knew a full two weeks before he did.
