Wireless headpones?

Wireless headpones? - 08/11/2003 19:46

I have been thinking about getting a pair of wireless headphones. I saw a pair at Radio Shack that operates using the 900 MHz band, but knowing what the reception and sound quality on my 900 MHz phone sounds like, I decided to hold off on getting those. I'm certainly not expecting audiophile quality, but I was thinking the technology *must* be good enough that wireless headphones can approach the sound quality of an average or above-average pair of wired headphones.

After some Googling, I found some favorable reviews of these wireless headphones from a company called Amphony, and since they use 2.4 GHz, the reception problems aren't as bad as with 900 MHz. The only real problems mentioned are conflicts with 2.4 GHz phones and 802.11b networks. I don't have a wireless network (yet) but I do have a 2.4 GHz phone. So I'm kinda torn as to whether I should take a shot on these. The sound quality is described in the review as "only acceptable" which makes me leery as well. There's a higher-end model but $250 is definitely more than I'm willing to spend.

So has anyone ever used either of these, or any other 2.4 GHz headphones? Any experiences to share?

The guys over at HeadRoom like the Sennheiser RS65. It's not 2.4GHz. And they like it better than the Amphony ones.

Good find. The RS65 does seem to be the best. Still seeing a lot of people with serious reservations about reception and build quality though. Have to give it some thought.

Still giving it some thought, or have you decided yet? I'm trying to decide what to get as well.

I've decided after reading all the reviews that none of them are worth the money. The Sennheiser RS65 or RS85 might be exactly what I want, but there are a lot of mixed reviews even on these "top of the line" models, and they're way outside my price range. I get a little nervous when even the best product in this category has about an even number of fans and detractors.

I think I'll keep my eyes open for clearance sales and the like, but there's no way I'm paying $150-$200 for them.

RS85 was on Techbargains yesterday for $134.99 after rebate. Here's the link.

Damn, that's very tempting....... Argh, I can't do it though. The complaints I've read about build quality are scaring me away. These are hard to find in retail stores, or I'd go try a pair out somewhere.
