I would have thought you'd feel more than a gentle sway! That kind destroys everything!

One of our sales people was on the phone with a customer when the earthquake happened (on the customer's end). I think she closed the sale, too!

Re: Earthquake!!!! - 22/12/2003 13:56

That's the one.
It was felt pretty good here in San Jose, about 60 miles from the epicenter.
I was on the first floor of one of our 18 story buildings.
I first though it was me. I had taken some Cold pills and though I was just feeling dizzy. It was a very gentle swaying motion but large enough to think I was losing my balance, and I was sitting down! The folks upstairs had a good scare though. People started to evacuate the Buildings. No damage to the structure that we can tell and Downtown San Jose seems pretty quite.
I'm sure if it were the kind that jolts and jerks, I probably would not be writing this right now.

Damage depends on a lot of factors. The epicenter was 7 km under the ground and in a somewhat less-populated area. I haven't yet seen any news on the quake other than the geological data.

Re: Earthquake!!!! - 22/12/2003 14:08

Yeah I'm really ignorant on earthquakes. Only one I've ever experienced here in central Scotland was tiny. Still, it made the computer jump across the carpet.

Wait a bit, you should feel the aftershock in just... a... few... seconds...

That'll teach you to vacation in Louisiana on earthquake day.

Re: Earthquake!!!! - 22/12/2003 14:56

Yep, that was a pretty good ride (I'm on the 8th floor of a building just south of San Francisco). The official info puts it at a 6.5 centered near San Simeon (where Hearst Castle is). There has been a bunch of decent sized aftershocks too.

That was kinda fun. :-)

That's only the 2nd that I've felt since I moved here about 8 years ago...

Just heard it in the news and my first thought was: go to the BBS and look, if something serious has happened...
Feels good to read you guys joking about it...

Oh man, that sucks. The initial reports said minor damage without fatalities. I'm sorry to hear that there were some.

Re: Earthquake!!!! - 22/12/2003 18:21

We felt it all the way down here in downtown L.A. It created a very slight swaying on my 5th floor office building; enough to cause the lights to swing a bit and for everyone to take notice.

Re: Earthquake!!!! - 22/12/2003 20:55

So it sounds earthquakes in califonia are kinda like blizzards in minnesota where it gets totally overhyped but really isn't that big of a deal

Re: Earthquake!!!! - 22/12/2003 21:49

Trust me. If this were the type of earthquake that all of a sudden snaps, jerks about two feet in one way then back again about three to four times and ends with a rumbling shake, this 6.5 would if did far more damage then it did.

Re: Earthquake!!!! - 23/12/2003 00:29

Yep. Felt it in Playa Del Ray, too. It was enough to make me feel nauseous (not tough considering the noon-time odors emanating from the kitchen today). The Christmas tree on the desk in the cubicle next to me was swaying back and forth. I started feeling sick, and just put my head down on the desk -- then I got bewildered, because I thought my desk was moving. I looked up at the monitor, and thought I was hallucinating, because it didn't seem to be moving, then I noticed the tree and clued in.

It's all about the distance. If you are close it will feel like a jolt, if you are far away it will feel like a wave. There are a couple of reasons for this which I am sure no one really wants me to get into, but that is the net effect.

Re: Earthquake!!!! - 23/12/2003 05:32

We had several in Manchester last year, I think it ranged from 2 to 3. When the worst one hit I was in the canteen at work. It's a very strange feeling, almost like bering pissed. The whole ground rumbled, I'm glad it only lasted a few seconds.

Re: Earthquake!!!! - 23/12/2003 06:12

Obviously then, if you stay pissed, you won't be bothered by earthquakes!

Re: Earthquake!!!! - 23/12/2003 12:23

And the aftershocks continue... We just had another one. Guessing around a 4 based on how yesterdays felt. It would be a lot easier to get work done if the building I am in would stop swaying

Re: Earthquake!!!! - 23/12/2003 12:53

There have been aftershocks in that area pretty much constantly (almost one every minute) since the 6.5. You can see a running log of them here.

Re: Earthquake!!!! - 23/12/2003 13:20

Too many aftershocks if you ask me.
I just hope all this activity is relieving pressure and not building up for a big one.
